“The verbal attack by Yiannis Balafas on Orfeas Georgiou shows a lack of arguments,” UNNED said in a statement after the two men’s television appearance on ERTNews.
Today, on the “Update” show on ERTNews, where ONNED President Orpheus Georgiou was hosted along with Ms. Katerina Tagara, former MP for PASOK and Mr. Giannis Balafas, member of the CE and P.G. of Syriza, he was confronted with the real face of the opposition, that of persistent toxicity and populism in public debate.
Specifically, Balafas, clearly irritated due to a lack of political arguments, chose the path of personal attacks and disparaging insults such as “badly spoiled“, “don’t giggle” and “be more serious“, attempting to downplay his political stance with a tone of political and ageist superiority that has no place in democratic debate.
Despite the crescendo of tension, Mr Georgiou maintained the composure and seriousness that public debate requires and confirmed in the clearest possible way that the new generation of politics insists on responding with positions, arguments and political ethics.
