Topic of a few days is the split of the New Left against the backdrop of Alexis Tsipras forming a new party.
At least five New Left MPs are set to leave the party in the coming days as they are ready to follow Alexis Tsipras. Among them are former party chairman Alexis Haritsis and Efi Achtsioglou, whose relations with the former prime minister had gone through turbulent times but everything changed in the face of their political survival.
Among the MPs who will leave will be Nassos Iliopoulos and Hussein Zeybek. A few days ago meven Ferhat Ozgur had left the party.
These MPs are likely to publish a joint letter of withdrawal from the party, saying that partnerships are needed to create a progressive front. Where progressive front see Alexis Tsipras and the Syriza 2.0 he is preparing.
Somehow the New Left will have no parliamentary group and will split. A party that emerged from the split of Syriza after the election of Kasselakis. Run for it.
However, there will be more than a few who will remain in the party and, led by Gavriel Sakellaridis and Euclidis Tsakalotos, will seek cooperation with Giannis Varoufakis and other left-wing groups.
Developments are going to be rapid over the next 20 days, as we will simultaneously see a split in the New Left, the unveiling of Alexis Tsipras’s party and crucial decisions on the future of Syriza.
In short, Alexis Tsipras is leaving debris everywhere to achieve his new personal ambitions in politics.
