The <strong>340-acre&lt;\/, which for decades served as a military camp and during the German occupation was the site of the sacrifice of <strong>101 executed patriots<\/strong>, has now been transformed into a space for <strong>greenery<\/strong>, recreation, and collective memory.<\/p>\n<p>The new park features more than <strong>7,000 new trees and shrubs<\/strong>, two <strong>playgrounds<\/strong>, a dog park, two <strong>tennis courts<\/strong>, outdoor exercise equipment, benches, gazebos, and new fencing, while restoration work continues on historic buildings that will be repurposed in the coming years.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tomanifesto.cachefly.net\/tomanifesto\/images\/placeholder.png\" alt=\"pavlou-mela.jpg\" data-dpc-media-id=\"190334\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/tomanifesto.cachefly.net\/image\/large\/96\/pavlou-mela.jpg\"><\/figure>\n<h2>A place returning to its citizens<\/h2>\n<p>The mayor <strong>of Pavlos Melas<\/strong>, <strong>Dimitris Aslanidis<\/strong>, described today as a historic day for western Thessaloniki, emphasizing that a space that had remained closed for decades is now opening to the residents of <strong>Stavroupoli<\/strong>, <strong>Polichni<\/strong>, and <strong>Eukarpia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>As he noted, the park is not just a place for walking and recreation, but a place that connects <strong>the Thessaloniki of yesterday<\/strong> with the <strong>Thessaloniki of tomorrow<\/strong>. At the same time, he called on citizens to protect this new public asset from indifference and vandalism, emphasizing that every tree, bench, and path belongs to the community.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Aslanidis also noted that the inauguration concerns the <strong>first phase<\/strong> of the project, as new renovations of abandoned buildings and additional interventions will follow, which will reinforce the park\u2019s character as a hub of culture and education.<\/p>\n<h2>Tzitzikostas and Skertsos &#8211; Investment in Western Thessaloniki<\/h2>\n<p>The European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, described the project as proof of the power of cooperation between institutions and society, emphasizing that it transforms an isolated area into a free space for greenery and culture.<\/p>\n<p>He stressed that the project is still in its early stages, as further interventions and funding will be required for it to evolve into a modern European <strong>metropolitan park<\/strong>.
