{"id":10583,"date":"2026-06-13T19:18:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-13T16:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.tomanifesto.gr\/?p=10583"},"modified":"2026-06-13T19:18:00","modified_gmt":"2026-06-13T16:18:00","slug":"greek-fighter-jets-are-stationed-permanently-in-cyprus-what-about-the-frigates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/en.tomanifesto.gr\/?p=10583","title":{"rendered":"Greek fighter jets are stationed permanently in Cyprus\u2014what about the frigates?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Greek fighter aircraft and frigates are establishing a permanent presence in Cyprus, strengthening deterrence, surveillance, and bilateral defense.<\/p>\n<p>Nicosia<\/strong> is promoting the <strong>permanent presence<\/strong> of fighter jets from the Air Force in Cyprus, as part of further deepening defense cooperation with <strong>Athens<\/strong> and strengthening the deterrent power of the <strong>Republic of Cyprus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Protection of Cyprus\u2019s FIR, a new model of air presence<\/h3>\n<p>The Cypriot side seeks more effective protection of the <strong>Cypriot FIR<\/strong>, especially following the attack on the British base at <strong>Akrotiri<\/strong>. According to information from the Cypriot newspaper \u201cFileleftheros,\u201d the model currently in place, with the presence of Greek <strong>F-16s<\/strong> at the <strong>Paphos<\/strong> air base, appears to form the basis for a more permanent air force deployment.<\/p>\n<p>The same sources report that, in addition to the rotation of <strong>crews<\/strong>, the possibility of rotating the type of aircraft that will be stationed or operate from Cypriot territory is also being considered. Currently, Greek F-16s are currently stationed in Cyprus, while at a later stage it is not ruled out that they may be replaced by <strong>F-4 Phantoms<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Operational cooperation with benefits for the National Guard<\/h3>\n<p>The presence of Greek fighter jets also serves as a <strong>training ground<\/strong> for the <strong>National Guard General Staff<\/strong>, strengthening cooperation, coordination, and <strong>interoperability<\/strong> with the Hellenic Air Force.<\/p>\n<p>Through joint activities, Cypriot forces gain valuable experience in complex operational scenarios, enhancing their readiness and effectiveness.<\/p>\n<h3>Frigates in the EEZ &#8211; Strengthening maritime deterrence<\/h3>\n<p>A similar philosophy appears to be adopted at sea, as plans are underway for a <strong>permanent presence<\/strong> of a Greek <strong>frigate<\/strong> in the Cypriot EEZ. The goal is to strengthen surveillance and protection of the area, as well as to counter potential <strong>asymmetric threats<\/strong> originating from the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the continuous presence of units from the Hellenic Navy will offer the Cypriot naval forces more opportunities for <strong>joint training<\/strong> and gaining operational experience.<\/p>\n<p>Currently in Cyprus is the frigate <strong>&#8220;Elli&#8221;<\/strong>, which is equipped with two 76-millimeter <strong>OTO Melara<\/strong> naval guns, two <strong>Phalanx<\/strong> close-in weapon systems, <strong>Harpoon<\/strong> surface-to-surface missiles, and <strong>Sea Sparrow<\/strong> surface-to-air missiles.
