Greek fighter aircraft and frigates are establishing a permanent presence in Cyprus, strengthening deterrence, surveillance, and bilateral defense.<\/p>\n
Nicosia<\/strong> is promoting the permanent presence<\/strong> of fighter jets from the Air Force in Cyprus, as part of further deepening defense cooperation with Athens<\/strong> and strengthening the deterrent power of the Republic of Cyprus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The Cypriot side seeks more effective protection of the Cypriot FIR<\/strong>, especially following the attack on the British base at Akrotiri<\/strong>. According to information from the Cypriot newspaper \u201cFileleftheros,\u201d the model currently in place, with the presence of Greek F-16s<\/strong> at the Paphos<\/strong> air base, appears to form the basis for a more permanent air force deployment.<\/p>\n The same sources report that, in addition to the rotation of crews<\/strong>, the possibility of rotating the type of aircraft that will be stationed or operate from Cypriot territory is also being considered. Currently, Greek F-16s are currently stationed in Cyprus, while at a later stage it is not ruled out that they may be replaced by F-4 Phantoms<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The presence of Greek fighter jets also serves as a training ground<\/strong> for the National Guard General Staff<\/strong>, strengthening cooperation, coordination, and interoperability<\/strong> with the Hellenic Air Force.<\/p>\n Through joint activities, Cypriot forces gain valuable experience in complex operational scenarios, enhancing their readiness and effectiveness.<\/p>\n A similar philosophy appears to be adopted at sea, as plans are underway for a permanent presence<\/strong> of a Greek frigate<\/strong> in the Cypriot EEZ. The goal is to strengthen surveillance and protection of the area, as well as to counter potential asymmetric threats<\/strong> originating from the Middle East.<\/p>\n At the same time, the continuous presence of units from the Hellenic Navy will offer the Cypriot naval forces more opportunities for joint training<\/strong> and gaining operational experience.<\/p>\n Currently in Cyprus is the frigate “Elli”<\/strong>, which is equipped with two 76-millimeter OTO Melara<\/strong> naval guns, two Phalanx<\/strong> close-in weapon systems, Harpoon<\/strong> surface-to-surface missiles, and Sea Sparrow<\/strong> surface-to-air missiles.
