And, of course, a fairer distribution of income, with more effective support for families—given our demographic situation—and for our most vulnerable fellow citizens. Second, a more modern state with more transparent operations. Third, a robust international presence for the country, with even stronger Armed Forces and an upgraded role as a hub for energy, transportation, data, and technology.”

At the same time, he outlined the political direction for the coming period, linking 2030 to the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Greek state.

“In 2030, Greece will mark 200 years since the founding of the modern Greek state. Our goal must be to reach this historic milestone having taken a major step forward, rather than confirming the myth of Sisyphus that was born in this country.”

Kostis Hatzidakis: What he said about tax cuts and the TIF package

The Deputy Prime Minister reiterated that the announcements at the Thessaloniki International Fair will be guided by the principle of returning a portion of growth to society, but without—as he said—excesses and handouts with no real value.

“Since 2019, we have been supporting society and reducing taxes, within the limits of the economy’s capacity. The Prime Minister’s announcements at the Thessaloniki International Fair in September will follow exactly the same direction.”

Kostis Hatzidakis also stated that the government’s goal is to return to citizens a portion of the revenue generated by economic growth and the fight against tax evasion.

“Our goal is to return to society a portion of the benefits of economic growth and the vigorous fight against tax evasion. Through tax cuts, measures that support the middle class, and further assistance for our most vulnerable fellow citizens.”

However, he made it clear that final decisions will be made later, when there is a clearer picture of the fiscal space.

“I cannot be more specific today, because we will have a clear picture of the available fiscal space by late summer. In any case, we will not go to the Thessaloniki International Fair with the mindset of ‘Santa Claus’ politicians who promise the moon.”

Reference to the Constitutional Revision and the elections

Referring to the Constitutional Revision, the Deputy Prime Minister spoke of an “institutional reboot,” highlighting the need to strengthen the credibility of the political system and state-citizen relations.

Regarding the upcoming elections, he argued that the most stable solution for the country remains a self-sufficient New Democracy government.

“The best solution for the country is a self-sufficient New Democracy government. And we say this not out of partisan self-interest, but because experience has shown that coalition governments in Greece cannot function particularly effectively.”

At the same time, he noted that the opposition parties reject any possibility of cooperation out of hand, a factor which—as he said—reinforces the argument for a self-sufficient government.

“The country cannot be governed through toxicity, unworkable promises, or sterile denial. With New Democracy, Greece can continue to take steady steps forward.”

Kostis Hatzidakis even referred to the prime minister’s statements that elections will be held in 2027, emphasizing that there is no reason to constantly entertain scenarios of early elections.

Attacks on Tsipras and jabs at Samaras

The Deputy Prime Minister was particularly sharp when asked to comment on the new political venture of Alexis Tsipras.

“As for Mr. Tsipras’s party, it reminds me a bit of the movie ‘The Day of the Marmot.’ We’re seeing the same old story all over again: same leader, same officials—only the name has changed.”

At the same time, he commented ironically on the former prime minister’s poll numbers.

“I remind you that Mr. Tsipras resigned from SYRIZA when his party had received about 18%, considering the result a failure. Now I see the percentage he’s getting in the polls—which is lower than what he received in the 2023 elections—being presented as a success. Of course, Mr. Tsipras may simply be a man of few demands!”

Commenting on the party of Maria Karystianou,he said it is a “protest party,” which, in his assessment, does not politically influence New Democracy.

Finally, he also referred to the scenarios of a new party being formed by former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras saying: “I have great respect for Antonis Samaras, as I served as his minister. And I have always believed in the great New Democracy. However, if Mr. Samaras does indeed go ahead with a new party, it will cause some damage to Mr. Velopoulos, Ms. Latinopoulou, and New Democracy. In any case, however, he will cause greater damage to himself and his legacy.”

Kostis Hatzidakis made it clear that the first substantive announcements regarding the new government program will be made by the prime minister at …

[3

post-10645","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-politics
["GET
