In a period of intense activity in the Eastern Mediterranean<\/b> and heightened geopolitical challenges<\/b>, Athens is seeking to strengthen its diplomatic ties with Eastern Libya<\/b>, seeking stable channels of communication and practical cooperation in critical sectors<\/b>. The recent meeting between Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis with the Deputy Commander of the General Command of the Libyan National Army<\/b> is part of this strategic approach, with an emphasis on the economy<\/b>, energy, and the management of migration flows<\/b>, while at the same time the issue of maritime zone delimitation<\/b> based on the International Law of the Sea<\/b> is returning to the forefront.<\/p>\n
Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis<\/b> held a meeting today, Monday, June 15, with the Deputy Commander of the General Command of the Libyan National Army, Saddam Haftar<\/b>, in Athens<\/b>. <\/p>\nThe context<\/h3>\n
Saddam Haftar\u2019s first visit to Athens follows the Foreign Minister\u2019s second visit to Benghazi, on March 28, 2026, and confirms the shared commitment to further strengthening communication channels and the particularly satisfactory relationship that has developed with Eastern Libya. <\/p>\n
During the meeting: <\/i><\/b><\/p>\n
-Emphasis was placed on deepening economic cooperation and promoting investment in various sectors, such as the energy sector, following the business mission that took place last January in Benghazi. Furthermore, they agreed on the need to upgrade maritime and air connections between the two sides.
-In the area of addressing irregular migration, they agreed to strengthen cooperation with the aim of reducing flows to Crete and Gavdos. They also noted the importance of continuing training programs for Libyan Coast Guard personnel in Greece and preparing a new cycle of training activities and the provision of technical expertise.
-Greece\u2019s role as a reliable partner in the EU and the UN Security Council was highlighted. The Minister of Foreign Affairs reiterated Greece\u2019s position in favor of a unified and strong Libya, free from third-party interference.-Regarding maritime zones, the Foreign Minister emphasized that Greece\u2019s priority remains the delimitation of an exclusive economic zone with Libya, as a genuine neighboring country with a shared coastline, based on the International Law of the Sea, as reflected in UNCLOS. <\/p>\n
