The Hellenic Red Cross, <\/b>in light of the ever-increasing presence of the rabbitfish <\/b>(Lagocephalus sceleratus) in Greek seas<\/b>, is informing the public about the dangers <\/b>posed by this specific species of fish <\/b>and provides useful First First Aid <\/b>in case of injury from its bite.<\/p>\n
The pufferfish contains a powerful neurotoxin (tetrodotoxin),<\/b> which makes consuming it extremely dangerous<\/b>. Because the distribution of the toxin varies, no part of the fish is considered safe to eat. <\/b>Although the rabbitfish\u2019s bite is not <\/b>toxic, its particularly powerful jaws, which resemble a beak<\/b>, can cause serious injuries <\/b>and severe bleeding<\/b>.<\/p>\n The Health Department of the Hellenic Red Cross recommends:<\/h3>\n
* Immediately clean the wound<\/b> with plenty of running clean water and soap. Do not use topical antiseptics without a doctor\u2019s instruction.<\/p>\n
* Apply steady pressure with clean gauze<\/b> or a clean cloth. If bleeding is heavy, maintain continuous pressure on the wound while elevating the limb.<\/p>\n
* Seek medical attention immediately<\/b>, as the bite wound will require specialized care, a tetanus shot, and possibly stitches if the wound is deep.<\/p>\n
* If the incident occurs in a remote area or the bleeding is severe,<\/b> citizens should immediately call EKAV (166) <\/b>or the European Emergency Number (112<\/b>), providing appropriate first aid until specialized help arrives.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
