On the one hand, the government continues to dominate the economic and investment landscape. On the other hand, the return of Alexis Tsipras has reshuffled the center-left, creating a rivalry that directly threatens the strategy of Charilaos Trikoupis. In this context, Nikos Androulakis’s presence at the SEV General Assembly served as a political test: Could he convince them that he has a governance plan, or would he once again limit himself to vague declarations?

The answer was not long in coming. Because the more the PASOK president tries to present himself as “prime minister material”, the more evident the gap between his promises and their implementation becomes. And that was precisely the element that dominated behind the words, the announcements, and the easy observations in his speech.

In attempting to be both pro-business and anti-establishment at the same time

The greatest contradiction of Androulakis’s appearance was that he was addressing the country’s top business audience, while at the same time attempting to maintain the familiar anti-establishment rhetoric he uses against the government.

On the one hand, he spoke of investments, productive transformation, and growth. On the other hand, he insisted on a narrative in which almost every economic success is presented as the result of privileged connections and every business development is viewed with suspicion. The result was a political message that tried to cover everything and ultimately failed to convince anyone fully.

This is not the first time PASOK has attempted to strike a balance between statism and the market. It is telling, however, that after months of tours and announcements, the leader of the official opposition still struggles to clearly describe exactly which economic model he is proposing.

Welfare benefits are multiplying, and cost estimates are disappearing

In recent weeks, Nikos Androulakis’s public appearances have resembled a list of benefits more than a coherent government program.

Free public transportation for young people. Tax cuts. Interventions in the housing market. New employment models. Income support. New oversight structures. A new announcement every week.

The problem isn’t the presentation of proposals. The problem is that the proposals are presented without answering the fundamental question that concerns businesses, workers, and taxpayers: how much will they cost, and who will finance them?

At the Hellenic Federation of Enterprises (SEV), where the discussion focuses on numbers rather than slogans, this shortcoming becomes even more apparent. Because the economy doesn’t run on wishful thinking or press releases. It runs on budgets, balances, and real data.

The shadow of 2015 continues to loom over the Center-Left

One of the most interesting aspects of the current political climate is that PASOK is trying to convince the public that it is the serious alternative to New Democracy, while increasingly adopting a strategy of making promises without a clear fiscal framework.

This is precisely the arena in which the government is attempting to frame the debate. And it is a particularly difficult arena for Harilaou Trikoupis. Because every time a discussion arises about benefits without cost estimates, experiences that a large part of society believes it paid dearly for resurface in the public consciousness.

Nikos Androulakis wants to be seen as a champion of fiscal responsibility. However, his political practice often gives the impression of a party trying to promise a little bit of everything to everyone, without explaining how the announcements fit together.

The real problem isn’t the government but credibility

The speech at the Hellenic Federation of Enterprises (SEV) confirmed an ongoing problem for the PASOK president. It’s not that he’s unable to criticize the government. That’s the easy part of being in the opposition.

The hard part is convincing people that he offers a more credible alternative.

And as long as his statements resemble a list of handouts rather than a comprehensive plan, the more the impression will be reinforced that PASOK is seeking a boost in the polls through easy-to-swallow promises. The market, investors, and citizens, however, are not looking for promises alone. They are looking for answers.

At the General Assembly of the Hellenic Federation of Enterprises (SEV), Nikos Androulakis attempted to present himself as the prime minister of tomorrow. The question is whether he managed to convince people that he has a plan for governing or whether he confirmed that, behind the easy announcements, the most critical political void remains: the void of credibility.

At the SEV General Assembly, Nikos Androulakis attempted to present himself as a responsible alternative to the government, but his announcements, contradictions, and…

[3

post-11091","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-politics
["GET
