Almost six million people in Haiti <\/b>are estimated to face acute food insecurity<\/b> in the coming months.<\/p>\n
And the reason is the gang violence, massive forced displacement of populations and pressures on the economy are keeping the impoverished Caribbean country<\/b> mired in a humanitarian crisis, a new assessment released yesterday (Thursday) says.<\/p>\n
About 5.8 million Haitians – more than half the population – are facing acute food insecurity, according to the Integrated Framework for Food Security (IPC) ranking, with more than 1.8 million of them in an emergency phase and in urgent need of assistance.<\/p>\n
The crisis is fuelled by a deteriorating security situation, economic shocks and untold problems for markets and agriculture, according to the IPC.<\/p>\n
Gangs have extended their control over sectors of the country<\/b> and more than 1.4 million people have been forcibly displaced<\/b>, making it increasingly difficult<\/b> to obtain food supplies and pushing families deeper into hunger.<\/p>\n
The newest forecast is slightly better than the previous one (5.91 million), as is the number of those classified in the emergency phase, which is partly attributed to aid distribution, better crop conditions in some areas and some reduction in inflation.<\/p>\n
The UN World Food Programme (WFP) says that thanks to the aid it distributes, more than 200,000 Haitians have ceased to be classified as emergencies by 2025<\/b>. However, aid organizations stress that recent progress is extremely fragile.<\/p>\n
