The President of DISY, Anita Dimitriou, is leaving today for Brussels<\/b>, where she will participate in the Leaders\u2019 Summit of the EPP,at a time that, as she notes, is particularly critical for the Cyprus issue<\/b>.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am leaving today for Brussels <\/b>and the EPP Leaders\u2019 Summit, at a very decisive moment for the Cyprus issue, following Ms. Olgin\u2019s contacts and the Secretary-General\u2019s ongoing efforts toward a new, expanded \u201c5+1\u201d conference,\u201d<\/b> Ms. Dimitriou stated.<\/p>\n
According to the DISY President, at this stage it is considered necessary <\/b>for the European Union European Union. <\/b>As she noted, she will seek the support of the EPP President and the leaders of the party\u2019s political family for the appointment of a European Envoy for the Cyprus issue.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt this stage, we consider the more active involvement of the European Union to be very important.<\/b> Following up on the letter I have already sent to the President of the EPP<\/b> and the leaders of our political family, I will ask for their support\u2014including through the influence they wield within the EU institutions\u2014for the appointment of a European Envoy for the Cyprus issue,\u201d she noted.<\/p>\n
Ms. Dimitriou also stated that she will seek the cooperation of EPP leaders to exert pressure on Turkey <\/b>to abandon its position on a two-state solution.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt the same time, I will seek their support so that pressure can be exerted on Turkey to abandon its unacceptable two-state position, in order to move toward substantive talks,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n
At the same time, he reiterated DISY\u2019s position that progress in Turkey\u2013EU relations cannot move forward without corresponding progress on the Cyprus issue.<\/p>\n
\u201cI will also reiterate our clear position that as long as Turkey remains intransigent, it cannot seek progress in its relations with the EU without corresponding progress on the Cyprus issue. Issues such as the lifting of visa requirements, the upgrading of the customs union, and participation in SAFE cannot move forward as long as Turkey remains unyielding,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
In closing, the DISY President emphasized that the current situation calls for clear messages and concrete actions.<\/p>\n
