And for many, it provided an easy opportunity for public condemnation even before the judicial process had been completed.

Meanwhile, the case followed its course through the courts.

During the hearing, the circumstances under which the file in question was found outside the Ministry of the Interior and, through a series of transfers, ended up in the hands of party officials and ultimately the former Member of the European Parliament.

In her closing argument, the prosecutor asserted that the defendant knew the file in question did not originate from the New Democracy party’s database of friends and members, citing the significant discrepancy between the data held by the party and the approximately 25,000 recipients of the email.

On the other hand, the defense has put forward a different line of argument, arguing that there was no intent to violate the law and that the former MEP herself was unaware of the origin of the file as described by the prosecution. It should be noted that even the Ministry of the Interior maintains that nothing was provided and that no violation of the law occurred.

However, beyond the purely legal aspects, government officials and New Democracy lawmakers are following the case’s developments with particular interest. Not only because of the political career of Anna-Michelle Asimakopoulou, who for years was one of the party’s most recognizable figures in Greece and Brussels, but also because they believe the case has taken on characteristics that go beyond the actual facts.

Behind the scenes, many point out that the former MEP faced consequences typically reserved for much more serious cases. They point out that she lost the opportunity to seek reelection to the European Parliament and saw her political career come to an abrupt halt, at a time when she was considered one of the most experienced members of the Greek delegation in Brussels.

This debate is expected to reignite following the issuance of the ruling, regardless of the outcome. As officials following the case point out, the court is called upon to rule on specific acts and factual circumstances.

And, of course, to assess the seriousness of the case, despite what has been written and the scale it had reached at that time. The judiciary always renders judgments based on common sense, proportionality, and the ability to distinguish between behaviors of varying gravity. And of course, the fact remains that, regardless of the verdict that follows, the political damage—especially for her—has already been done.

And all this over sending a few emails, when each of us receives hundreds of spam messages in our inboxes.

A lot has been written about the Anna-Michelle Asimakopoulou email scandal, and it seems that the publicity it has received is inversely proportional to …

[3

post-11622","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-politics
["GET
