With negotiations in Switzerland at a critical juncture, Iran <\/b>having called for a suspension of talks with the U.S. <\/b>over the issue of Lebanon<\/b>, Israel <\/b>states that its army will remain in the south of the country. <\/p>\n
For his part, the chief of the General Staff<\/b> of the Israeli army, Eyal Zamir<\/b>, stated earlier today that \u201cthe ceasefire in Lebanon is fragile<\/b>\u201d and that \u201cIsraeli forces must maintain a high level of readiness for a possible resumption of operations if required.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHezbollah has suffered a serious and significant blow<\/b>,\u201d said Eyal Zamir. He even warned that \u201cthe Israeli army is ready to continue operations to prevent the organization\u2019s forces from regrouping<\/b>.\u201d <\/p>\n
In response to Israel, Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem <\/b>warned today that \u201cIsrael will not remain in Lebanon<\/b>\u201d and that the organization \u201cwill respond to any violation of the ceasefire\u201d by the Israeli side<\/b>.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe presence of Israeli forces on Lebanese soil is no longer possible,\u201d said Naim Kassem. \u201cThere are no safe zones for Israel<\/b>,\u201d said the leader of the pro-Iranian organization in a televised address. \u201cWe have a Lebanese army that is the only one capable of deploying and is responsible for safeguarding the sovereignty<\/b>\u201d of Lebanon, and we are cooperating with it,\u201d added Naim Kassem.<\/p>\nThe death toll in Lebanon has exceeded 4,000<\/h3>\n
It should be noted, however, that Israeli attacks on Lebanon have caused the deaths of 4,057 people since the start of the war between Israel <\/b>and Hezbollah on March 2.
