In an environment of heightened geopolitical tension in the Middle East<\/b> and intense concerns about Europe’s energy security<\/b>, Apostolos Tzitzikostas gave a clear signal<\/b> on the fuel situation in European aviation, making clear that there are no shortages<\/b> in aviation fuel stocks in any member state<\/b> and that flights are continuing as normal<\/b> without disruption due to fuel supply. At the same time, he underlined that the European mechanisms are fully alert<\/b> and are closely monitoring developments, as a prolonged scenario of instability<\/b> could affect the global energy supply chain<\/b>, leading to the Commission to a coordinated activation of emergency reserves<\/b> to ensure the smooth functioning of transport and air traffic in the EU<\/b>.<\/p>\n
At the press conference after the Council<\/b>, Mr. Tzitzikostas<\/b>, asked about the stocks of fuel<\/b> in aircraft and airports of the EU<\/b>, due to the crisis in the Middle East<\/b>, pointed out, among other things<\/b>, the following:<\/p>\nWe maintain emergency stocks<\/h3>\n
“The EU has sufficient fuel for airports and aircraft for the coming period and what is being said about shortages in the coming weeks is not true. However, we are preparing for the possibility of fuel supply shortages in aviation if the crisis in the Middle East continues for a long period of time. The relevant Commission Oil Coordination Group met yesterday and discussed this issue, as fuel availability remains a primary concern for all of us. After all, EU refineries cover around 70% of Europe’s total consumption and only the remaining 30% is covered by imports. But it is clear that if the current situation in the Strait of Hormuz continues for a long period of time, the EU will be prepared for a coordinated release of fuel stocks for airports and aircraft. We are holding emergency stocks, which will only be released if required. So far, however, we are managing the situation without shortages. And we also have no flight cancellations at this stage due to lack of fuel. Any flight cancellations that have been announced so far by European airlines are related to the high cost of fuel and not to a lack of fuel. In any case, the EU will continue to closely monitor both fuel sufficiency, in cooperation with industry and aviation, and the full respect of the rights of air passengers.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
