{"id":12477,"date":"2026-06-23T22:47:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-23T19:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.tomanifesto.gr\/?p=12477"},"modified":"2026-06-23T22:47:00","modified_gmt":"2026-06-23T19:47:00","slug":"stavros-kalafatis-greece-is-becoming-a-leading-regional-innovation-hub","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/en.tomanifesto.gr\/?p=12477","title":{"rendered":"Stavros Kalafatis: Greece Is Becoming a Leading Regional Innovation Hub"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a speech of great political and strategic significance, <b>the Deputy Minister of Development, responsible for Research and Innovation<\/b>, <b>Stavros Kalafatis,<\/b> presided over the official closing ceremony of the <b>1st Greek-French Forum Research and Innovation (1<\/b><b>st<\/b> <b>Franco<\/b><b>&#8211;<\/b><b>Hellenic<\/b> <b>Research<\/b> <b>and<\/b> <b>Innovation<\/b> <b>Forum<\/b><b>)<\/b>, which took place at the French Institute of Greece.<\/p>\n<p>In his remarks, <b>Mr. Kalafatis<\/b> emphasized that this two-day Forum constitutes the immediate operational response to the bilateral <b>Comprehensive Strategic Partnership<\/b> signed last April in Athens by Prime Minister <b>Kyriakos Mitsotakis<\/b> and President <b>Emmanuel<\/b> <b>Macron<\/b><b>.<\/b> As he aptly stated, this event epitomizes <b>Science Diplomacy (<\/b><b>Science<\/b> <b>Diplomacy<\/b><b>)<\/b> in action, demonstrating that scientific cooperation is now a critical pillar of foreign policy and European integration.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tomanifesto.cachefly.net\/tomanifesto\/images\/placeholder.png\" alt=\"kalaf1.jpg\" data-dpc-media-id=\"191236\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/tomanifesto.cachefly.net\/image\/large\/96\/kalaf1.jpg\"><\/figure>\n<h3><b>The 4 Pillars of European &amp; Mediterranean Sovereignty<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b> <\/b><\/p>\n<p>The Deputy Minister of Development analyzed the strategic alliances forged during the Forum, which focus on four critical areas that bolster European strategic autonomy and stability in the Mediterranean:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Defense and Dual-Use Technologies (<\/b><b>Dual<\/b><b>&#8211;<\/b><b>use<\/b><b>):<\/b> Linking defense industries with leading research centers to foster domestic European excellence.<\/li>\n<li><b>Energy and Sustainable Development:<\/b> Joint development of smart grids and exploration of next-generation solutions, such as clean hydrogen and <b>Small Modular Reactors (<\/b><b>SMRs<\/b><b>)<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li><b>Health and Biotechnology:<\/b> Accelerating collaboration between biomedical research and industry for personalized medicine.<\/li>\n<li><b>Artificial Intelligence and Digital Technologies:<\/b> Mr. Kalafatis <b><\/b> placed particular emphasis on AI as the cornerstone of industrial autonomy, highlighting the Greek government\u2019s strategic decision to collaborate with the European <b>Mistral<\/b> <b>AI<\/b>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Open Call for French Investments Across Greece<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b> <\/b><\/p>\n<p>The Deputy Minister of Development presented the government\u2019s deliberate plan to transform the Greek economy into a knowledge-based model, which <b>permanently reverses the \u201cbrain drain\u201d into \u201cbrain gain\u201d<\/b>. Speaking on a personal note, the Deputy Minister remarked: \u201cAs someone who has devoted a large part of my political career to the development of Northern Greece, and specifically my hometown, Thessaloniki \u2014which is now emerging as a major technology hub alongside Athens\u2014I am proud that this scientific renaissance is spreading throughout our entire nation. From Macedonia to Attica and Crete, our regions are becoming magnets for international investment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, he issued <b>an open call to French companies<\/b> to invest aggressively in Greek research hubs, where they will find true \u201cgolden opportunities\u201d and a highly skilled workforce. As a concrete example of this excellence, <b>Mr. Kalafatis<\/b> cited the long-standing collaboration between <b>IPRETEA of EKEFE \u201cDemokritos\u201d<\/b> with the French organizations <b>CEA<\/b> and <b>CNRS<\/b> within the framework of <b>EUROfusion<\/b> for the <b>ITER<\/b> reactor, emphasizing that the relationship is so deep that even officers of the French Navy choose Greek laboratories for their specialized scientific training.<\/p>\n<h3><b>The Milestone of the Greek Presidency in 2027<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b> <\/b><\/p>\n<p>Concluding his speech, <b>Stavros Kalafatis<\/b> linked the Forum\u2019s conclusions to the near future of the European Union. Noting that exactly one year from today, in <b>July 2027, Greece will assume the rotating Presidency of the Council of the EU<\/b>, he pledged that the strategic priorities forged at the Forum (AI governance, defense innovation, energy solutions) will be at the top of the European agenda that Athens will promote.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, <b>Mr. Kalafatis<\/b> expressed his gratitude to the French Ambassador <b>Laurence<\/b> <b>Auer<\/b> and the <b>General Secretariat for Research and Innovation<\/b>, recalling the deep cultural ties between the two countries on the occasion of the <b>20th anniversary of Greece\u2019s full membership in the International Organization of La Francophonie<\/b>. He also announced the Ministry of Development\u2019s institutional intention to transform the Forum into a permanent, periodic institution.
