In this light, the tenure of Adonis Georgiadis at the Ministry of Health can rightly be assessed as one of the most productive and reform-oriented in recent years.

Adonis Georgiadis is a political figure who rarely leaves anyone indifferent. He is known for his forceful public rhetoric and confrontational nature, and has long been one of the main targets of the opposition. However, political history usually does not remember the tone of the confrontation. It remembers the work that was produced. And in the case of healthcare, this work is now visible throughout the country.

For the first time in many years, an extensive program to upgrade public hospitals is underway. Dozens of hospitals and health centers are being renovated using funds from the Recovery Fund, gaining modern infrastructure that had been lacking for decades. Facilities that had been left to deteriorate over time are gradually being transformed into modern healthcare facilities, improving both the patient experience and the working conditions of healthcare professionals.

At the same time, one of the largest upgrades of medical technology equipment that the National Health System (ESY) has ever seen is underway. The new Cardiology Clinic at the General Oncology Hospital of Kifissia “Agioi Anargyroi”, the installation of new CT scanners, and the strengthening of critical clinics throughout the country are just a few examples of a broader modernization strategy.

Even more important, however, is the shift in philosophy that is being pursued. For decades, the Greek healthcare system operated almost exclusively on a curative basis. Prevention remained the “poor relation” of public policy. Through the programs

“PROLAMVANO,” millions of citizens are being encouraged to undergo free screenings for serious diseases, fostering a national culture of prevention for the first time. This is a reform that experts believe will yield even greater results in the coming years, reducing morbidity and saving lives through early diagnosis.

Equally crucial is the adoption of the first National Strategy for Palliative Care. Greece was one of the very few European countries that lacked a comprehensive framework for supporting patients with serious and life-threatening illnesses.

Today marks an important step toward filling this gap, with the goal of creating a healthcare system that addresses not only the disease itself but also its overall impact on the individual.

At the same time, the country is strengthening its presence in the European dialogue on health. The Minister of Health’s active participation in the Ministerial Councils of the European Union and his interventions on pharmaceutical policy, innovation, and biotechnology highlight a Greece that is asserting a role in these developments rather than passively following the decisions of others.

Adonis Georgiadis’s political opponents often focus on his communication style. However, the essence lies elsewhere. It lies in the fact that under his leadership, the Ministry of Health is demonstrating a level of activity rarely seen in the past. Few ministers have had to simultaneously manage the consequences of the pandemic, the chronic problems of the National Health System, the need to modernize infrastructure, and the transition to a more digital and efficient healthcare system.

The comparison with previous periods is inevitable. For years, public debate has revolved around exactly the same observations: shortages of equipment, dilapidated infrastructure, non-existent preventive care, and delays in reforms that were announced but never implemented. Today, regardless of one’s political stance, there are specific projects, specific timelines, and tangible results.

Of course, no one can claim that all problems have been solved. Staff shortages, the pressures of on-call duties, and the increased needs of an aging population continue to pose major challenges. However, the evaluation of political leadership is not based on the existence of problems, but on whether they are addressed with a plan, determination, and measurable interventions.

And this is precisely where Adonis Georgiadis’s success lies. Despite the fierce criticism he faces, he has managed to associate his name with a period of substantial progress and modernization in the healthcare sector. His legacy is not limited to announcements or public relations initiatives. It is evident in the clinics being opened, the hospitals being renovated, in equipment being installed, in prevention programs being implemented, and in reforms that for years remained merely on paper. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’s choice of minister should likewise be considered an unqualified success.

History is always the ultimate judge of political figures. However, if the assessment were to take place today, based on the scope of their actions, the volume of work produced, and their commitment to reform, Adonis Georgiadis could justifiably claim a place among the most effective Health Ministers of the post-dictatorship era. And this is not a political slogan. It is a conclusion drawn from the projects that are already visible to the public.

*Nikos Pagonis is an administrative officer at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (EKPA) and a former deputy director of e-EFKA.

Health has always been one of the most challenging areas of public policy in Greece.
