Amid the heat wave<\/b>, the government of France<\/b> is looking to other European countries<\/b>, such as Greece <\/b>to address the daily challenges workers face in extreme temperatures. <\/p>\n
On the French television program \u201cRTL Matin,\u201d French Minister of Labor, Jean-Pierre Farandou<\/b> argued that the government and authorities should follow the examples of European countries that are accustomed to warmer temperatures<\/b>. <\/p>\n
For the minister, the solution begins with adjusting work practices to alert levels. He points out that \u201ca plan (\u2026) to address this intense heat\u201d is already in effect, through a decree issued last year that \u201crequires companies to adjust working conditions according to alert levels: yellow, orange, red<\/b>.\u201d <\/p>\n France and workers in the heatwave <\/h3>\n
The measure primarily concerns workers exposed to outdoor conditions, \u201cespecially in the construction sector.\u201d Jean-Pierre Farandou<\/b> also emphasizes employers\u2019 responsibility and the inspections carried out by the state. \u201cI have reinforced this plan with inspections<\/b>,\u201d he adds. <\/p>\n
In his view, adaptation concerns not only work but, more broadly, the organization of society. <\/p>\n
Jean-Pierre Farandou states that he wishes to launch this process in collaboration with the social partners. He announces a discussion aimed at drawing lessons from the current situation and \u201cpreparing (\u2026) for future heat waves\u201d<\/b>. <\/p>\n
Among the proposals mentioned are: work schedules, equipment, and broader changes in collective habits. \u201cWe can work on this\u2014on schedules and equipment<\/b>,\u201d he explains. <\/p>\n
The minister even extends the discussion to other areas: \u201cDo all exams in this country have to be held in June? Do the final matches have to be held in June?<\/b>\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cLet\u2019s look at Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Greece\u201d <\/h3>\n
The French minister explained that France can learn from other countries<\/b>. <\/p>\n
He specifically stated: \u201cI can also tell you that on Friday I will have a discussion with the Spanish minister, as I, too, am beginning to make comparisons<\/b>. I will have an exchange of views with her so she can explain to me how Spain is organized. This will contribute to this effort of reflection and perspective.\u201d <\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re in Europe. We probably won\u2019t compare ourselves to Asia or the United States\u2014though who knows\u2014but in any case, in Europe we have Southern Europe: Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Greece<\/b>.\u201d <\/p>\n
\u201cLet\u2019s see how these countries are organized. We see that our temperatures are beginning to align with the climate of those countries, so we just need to look at how they do it. In their case, it\u2019s more a matter of culture. We see that we have a cultural issue; we know full well that these countries are culturally accustomed to living in the heat. \u201cWe need to draw inspiration from their methods and certainly apply them in France<\/b>,\u201d he explained. <\/p>\n
