Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis revealed to newsauto<\/b> the government\u2019s decision to proceed with the comprehensive upgrade of the Serres Motorway, with 9 million euros in funding from the Ministry of Sports\u2019 Public Investment Program.<\/p>\nThis is one of the most significant projects ever undertaken in the sports infrastructure of Greek motorsports and a project that aims to restore Serres to the top of the Balkans.<\/p>\n
For more than 25 years, the Serres Circuit has been the country\u2019s premier racing facility. The track has hosted national and international races, car tests, training programs, and thousands of motorsport enthusiasts from Greece and abroad.<\/p>\n
However, international competition has increased significantly in recent years. New tracks in Bulgaria, Romania, and other countries in the region are vying for events and investments, leveraging modern infrastructure and high-level certifications.<\/p>\n
This is precisely why the upgrade of the Serres circuit is of strategic importance.<\/p>\n
The project includes extensive improvements to the race course, safety zones, facilities for teams and drivers, the pits, the administrative buildings, and the hospitality facilities. The goal is for the track to achieve full compliance with current FIA and FIM standards, paving the way for it to host major international events.<\/p>\n
The upgrade isn\u2019t just about racing

Serres\u2019 new era is linked to the growth of motorsports tourism, a sector that generates hundreds of millions of euros each year in European regions with modern racing facilities. Drivers, teams, tire companies, automakers, driving schools, and event organizers are constantly seeking modern tracks for testing and training.<\/p>\n
Serres is ideally located. Within a few hours, millions of residents from Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, North Macedonia, and Turkey can reach the track. This gives the region a significant competitive advantage over other facilities in Southeast Europe.<\/p>\n
At the same time, the upgraded track has the potential to become a center for driver training and road safety. At a time when Greece is placing particular emphasis on reducing traffic accidents, the existence of a facility meeting international standards can support driver training programs, initiatives for young people, testing of new technologies, and corporate training programs.<\/p>\n
The government\u2019s decision also sends a strong message to the international motorsport community. Greece is not merely observing developments in the Balkans. It is investing to be at the forefront of those developments.<\/p>\n
