{"id":12792,"date":"2026-06-25T13:27:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-25T10:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.tomanifesto.gr\/?p=12792"},"modified":"2026-06-25T13:27:00","modified_gmt":"2026-06-25T10:27:00","slug":"papanikolaou-on-leaving-karystianos-party-a-closed-circle-of-people-who-talk-among-themselves-and-hide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/en.tomanifesto.gr\/?p=12792","title":{"rendered":"Papanikolaou on leaving Karystianos&#8217; party: A closed circle of people who talk among themselves and hide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The reasons that led him to <b>resignation <\/b>from the party <b>\u201cHope for Democracy\u201d<\/b> were explained by retired Air Force General <b>Athanasios Papanikolaou<\/b>, speaking on ERT News Radio 105.8 and on the program \u201cModestly and Humbly\u201d with Dimitris Petropoulos.<\/p>\n<p>As he noted, his involvement in the initiative was <b>limited<\/b> from the outset, as <b>he did not play an active role<\/b> in party proceedings nor did he participate in <b>meetings or decision-making bodies. <\/b>\u201cI believed that a citizens\u2019 movement was taking shape, and that is why I stood by Ms. Karystianou. Along the way, however, I realized that nothing of the sort has materialized, at least not yet,\u201d he noted, leaving open the possibility that it might happen in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Referring to his initial support for <b> the leader of  the party , <\/b>he explained that he had signed the founding declaration and sent a video message expressing his views on foreign policy and geopolitical issues, which was used during the political party\u2019s presentation. However, as he emphasized, he had not participated in the event at the Olympion nor in any organizational processes.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Papanikolaou argued that he had expected a structure involving grassroots participation,<b> collective processes, dialogue, and democratic functioning<\/b>. As he said, there was no clear articulation<b> of political positions <\/b> nor any opportunity to communicate with party representatives, a fact that raised serious concerns for him.<\/p>\n<p>He made special mention of <b>foreign policy issues<\/b>, arguing that he repeatedly requested <b>information <\/b>on the party\u2019s positions in order to determine<b> whether he agreed with them<\/b>, but received no response. \u201cWhen you see a closed circle of people discussing and <b>making decisions without transparency, <\/b>you wonder what your role is in all of this,\u201d she noted.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on statements made by<b> Maria Karistianou <\/b>regarding<b> foreign policy<\/b> and her characterization of the prime minister as a \u201c<b>traitor<\/b>\u201d due to his meeting with Turkish President <b>Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan, <\/b>the retired air force general expressed his <b>disagreement <\/b>, describing such an approach as \u201cextreme.\u201d As he noted, Greece has historically maintained <b>channels of communication<\/b> with Turkey regardless of the tensions that occasionally arise in bilateral relations.<\/p>\n<p>In closing, he clarified that <b>he has no personal conflict<\/b> with Ms. Karystianou and expressed his <b>respect <\/b> for her efforts regarding the Tembi case.
