Rescue operations are continuing around the clock, as <strong>fears are growing that the death toll could reach the thousands as dawn breaks.<\/strong>  The <strong>\u201cSim\u00f3n Bol\u00edvar\u201d International Airport <\/strong>has sustained serious damage and has<strong>been temporarily closed.<\/strong> In large parts of the capital <strong>, power and cell phone service have been cut off.<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>     Panicked residents have taken to the streets and public squares, describing the earthquakes as a \u201cloud roar.\u201d\u00a0<strong>Desperate cries can be heard amid the rubble<\/strong>, as people frantically shout the names of relatives and friends who are missing and believed to be trapped in collapsedbuildings, such as a 22-story building in Caracas. <\/p>\n<p>     Live footage from Reuters from the \u201cdisaster zone\u201d\u2014as it has been declared\u2014in Caracas. <\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed_media\" data-embed-provider=\"YouTube\">\n<div class=\"dp-youtube-video dp-embed-video\" data-embed=\"8bwvGTtOP98\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8bwvGTtOP98?feature=oembed\">\n<div class=\"play-button\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>     UN: More than 100 buildings collapsed in La Guaira following the earthquakes <\/h3>\n<p>     The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced that more than 100 buildings have collapsed in La Guaira, a small coastal state north of Caracas that was hardest hit by the earthquakes. <\/p>\n<p>     According to the latest disaster response report, the scale of the disaster exceeds the capacity of local authorities, with the organization designating the area as a priority for international rescue teams. <\/p>\n<p>     As noted, \u201calthough the extent of the losses and humanitarian needs remains unclear, it is evident that the damage is severe.\u201d The state of La Guaira, where the country\u2019s main airport is located, has been declared a disaster zone, while it is estimated that the casualties may be significant and that further aftershocks are likely. <\/p>\n<h3>     Citizens are turning to social media to locate missing persons <\/h3>\n<p>     As search and rescue operations continue in Venezuela, social media has become a key tool for locating people missing in the aftermath of the earthquakes. <\/p>\n<p>     Names, photos, and addresses of missing persons are circulating widely online, with users seeking information about their whereabouts and trying to locate relatives and friends. <\/p>\n<p>     Meanwhile, the Central University of Venezuela has published a list of students missing after the quakes, many of whom were reportedly living in La Guaira, according to local media. <\/p>\n<p>     The newspaper El Carabobe\u00f1o also published the names of 39 students reported missing by the university. <\/p>\n<p>Video from Maiquet\u00eda International Airport captures the moment the two powerful earthquakes struck.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<figure>\n<div class=\"embed-responsive\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"> WATCH: Moment powerful 7+ magnitude earthquake (terremoto) causes major damage at Caracas Airport, Venezuela pic.twitter.com\/2kd7oNFxbs <\/p>\n<p> \u2014 Rapid Report (@RapidReport2025) June 24, 2026 <\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<h3>     Fears of many casualties <\/h3>\n<p>     According to the country\u2019s president, <b>at least 32 people have lost their lives and more than 700 have been injured by the two powerful earthquakes.<\/b> <\/p>\n<p>     However, initial estimates from <b>the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)<\/b> suggest a very high death toll, widespread destruction, and the possibility of strong aftershocks in the coming hours. The agency\u2019s models estimate a 44% probability that the death toll will exceed <b>10,000,<\/b> while they estimate a 30% probability that the death toll will exceed 100,000. <\/p>\n<figure>     <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tomanifesto.cachefly.net\/tomanifesto\/images\/placeholder.png\" alt=\"32041143.jpg\" data-dpc-media-id=\"191356\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/tomanifesto.cachefly.net\/image\/large\/96\/32041143.jpg\"> <\/figure>\n<p>     According to USGS data, the first seismic tremor\u2014the \u201cforeshock,\u201d as it was characterized\u2014measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale, was recorded at 6:04 p.m. (local time; 01:04 Greek time) at a depth of 21.9 kilometers, about 200 kilometers west of Caracas. The second, measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale, with a shallow focal depth of 10 kilometers, followed 39 seconds later, 45 kilometers from there. They remained there overnight, <b>not daring to return for fear that houses and other buildings would collapse if there were more aftershocks. <\/b> <\/p>\n<p>     \u201cIt was unbelievable; I don\u2019t even know how long it lasted. I was on the top floor and things started falling,\u201d said Heidi Romero, a 42-year-old store manager who works at a shopping center in Altamira. \u201cThe whole wall was covered in cracks, things were falling from the ceiling\u2014it was horrible,\u201d said Odalis Escalona, a 54-year-old bank employee. <\/p>\n<p>     There were reports <b>of power outages in the capital,<\/b> where many streets were littered with broken glass. <\/p>\n<p>     Carmen Gedes, 69, was in her bedridden sister\u2019s room when the ground began to shake. \u201cThe intensity just kept increasing,\u201d said the resident of a middle-class neighborhood in the hills of the capital. \u201cI started to see the windows shaking, then everything was shaking. My sister, a neighbor, and I were clinging to each other; we couldn\u2019t get out,\u201d she added. <\/p>\n<h3>     Staff increase at the hospital <\/h3>\n<p>     A tsunami warning was issued after the earthquakes, but it was quickly lifted. <\/p>\n<p>     At <b>Hospital de Cl\u00ednicas <\/b>, orders were given to double the night shift staff in order to handle the large influx of injured patients. <\/p>\n<p>     Venezuela\u2019s largest airport in Maicaeta, on the coast north of Caracas, has suspended operations due to the damage it has sustained, Rodr\u00edguez noted. <\/p>\n<p>     Classes at <b>schools<\/b> have been suspended for the rest of the week. <\/p>\n<figure>     <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tomanifesto.cachefly.net\/tomanifesto\/images\/placeholder.png\" alt=\"32040225.jpg\" data-dpc-media-id=\"191357\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/tomanifesto.cachefly.net\/image\/large\/96\/32040225.jpg\"> <\/figure>\n<h3>     At least ten aftershocks <\/h3>\n<p>     At least 10 aftershocks were recorded on Thursday morning, ranging from 2.4 to 4.5 on the Richter scale at shallow focal depths. <\/p>\n<p>     The <b>Venezuelan Seismological Research Institute <\/b>(Funvisis) reported 10 aftershocks, most of which occurred in the states of La Guaira and Miranda. <\/p>\n<p>     Of the total number of aftershocks, six were recorded in La Guaira, one of the hardest-hit areas. <\/p>\n<h3>     The earthquakes in Venezuela were also felt in Cura\u00e7ao <\/h3>\n<p>     The government of Cura\u00e7ao reported that residents of the Caribbean island nation also felt the tremors from the earthquakes in Venezuela. There were no immediatereports of serious damage in the area. <\/p>\n<p>     Cura\u00e7ao is located about 40 miles off the coast of Venezuela and about 110 miles (180 kilometers) north of the earthquake epicenters. <\/p>\n<figure>     <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tomanifesto.cachefly.net\/tomanifesto\/images\/placeholder.png\" alt=\"32039940.jpg\" data-dpc-media-id=\"191359\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/tomanifesto.cachefly.net\/image\/large\/96\/32039940.jpg\"> <\/figure>\n<h3>     Condolences <\/h3>\n<p>     Delcy Rodr\u00edguez contacted <b>Marco Rubio. <\/b>\u201cI had a phone conversation with the Secretary of State of the United States of America, Marco Rubio, who expressed his solidarity and support for the people of Venezuela during these difficult times for our country,\u201d Rodr\u00edguez wrote on Twitter. <\/p>\n<figure>\n<div class=\"embed-responsive\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"es\" dir=\"ltr\"> I have spoken by phone with the Secretary of State of the United States of America, Marco Rubio, who has expressed his solidarity and support for the Venezuelan people during these difficult times for our nation. https:\/\/t.co\/VajSZHhVF1 <\/p>\n<p> \u2014 Delcy Rodr\u00edguez (@delcyrodriguezv) June 25, 2026 <\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>     Meanwhile, leaders from countries such as El Salvador, the Dominican Republic, Spain, China, and Brazil have offered their support. <\/p>\n<p>     Beijing is \u201cwilling to offer as much assistance as it can\u201d to Venezuela, said the spokesperson for the <b>Chinese<\/b> Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Guo Jiajun. <\/p>\n<p>     French President <b>Emmanuel Macron<\/b> expressed \u201chis thoughts and support for the people of Venezuela\u201d. \u201cI express my deepest solidarity with the victims, their families, and all those who have mobilized on the ground,\u201d Macron said in a post on social media.  <\/p>\n<figure>\n<div class=\"embed-responsive\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"fr\" dir=\"ltr\"> My thoughts and support go out to the Venezuelan people following the earthquake that struck the country.
