{"id":13003,"date":"2026-06-26T12:26:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-26T09:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.tomanifesto.gr\/?p=13003"},"modified":"2026-06-26T12:26:00","modified_gmt":"2026-06-26T09:26:00","slug":"tsiodrass-message-to-the-european-commission-calling-for-stricter-controls-on-imported-products","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/en.tomanifesto.gr\/?p=13003","title":{"rendered":"Tsiodras&#8217;s Message to the European Commission Calling for Stricter Controls on Imported Products"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Immediate action and stricter controls to combat imports of dangerous products into the EU for the benefit of consumers, calls for MEP <b>Dimitris Tsiodras<\/b>, in a question he submitted to the European Commission. <\/p>\n<p>Specifically, he asks the European Commission what measures it will take, up to and including the full implementation of the recent agreement on the reform of the <b>Customs Union<\/b>, so that we can address these imports more effectively, as well as what portion of the resources from the upcoming <b>Single Market and Customs<\/b> will be allocated to strengthening coordinated actions and controls for better detection of such shipments.<\/p>\n<p>The Member of the European Parliament and spokesperson for the New Democracy (ND) European Parliamentary Group notes that<b> the number of low-value parcels imported reached approximately 6 billion in 2025, making it practically impossible to monitor them.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>He emphasizes that the overwhelming majority of these packages were purchased through third-country platforms, and a large portion of them may not comply with EU regulations. It underscores that this poses a significant <b>threat to consumer health and safety<\/b>, who are confronted with imported products such as dangerous children\u2019s toys and items containing hazardous metals.<\/p>\n<p>He adds that, for example, in 2025, the highest number of notifications regarding unsafe products was recorded through the EU Rapid Alert System (4,671). <\/p>\n<p>Dimitris Tsiodras concludes by emphasizing the need to increase the use of artificial intelligence to make the management of these packages more efficient.<\/p>\n<h3>The question<\/h3>\n<p>The text of the question follows:<\/p>\n<p>Question requesting a written answer from the Commission <\/p>\n<p><b>Subject: Strengthening controls on imported parcels to protect consumers from dangerous products <\/b><\/p>\n<p>The number of low-value imported packages reached approximately 6 billion in 2025, making it practically impossible to inspect them all.<\/p>\n<p>The overwhelming majority of these parcels were purchased through third-country platforms, and a large proportion of them may not comply with EU rules. <\/p>\n<p>This poses a significant threat to the health and safety of consumers, who are confronted with imported products such as dangerous children\u2019s toys and items containing hazardous metals.<\/p>\n<p>For example, in 2025, the highest number of notifications regarding unsafe products was recorded through the EU\u2019s Rapid Alert System (4,671). <\/p>\n<p>The recent agreement on the reform of the Customs Union is an important step toward addressing this influx. However, the customs data hub, a key component of this reform, will not become operational until July 2028. <\/p>\n<p>The Commission is asked:<\/p>\n<p><b>1.\tWhat measures will it take until the hub becomes operational, and how will it contribute to increasing the use of artificial intelligence to make the management of these parcels more efficient?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>2.
