New national space program worth 350 million euros<\/b> for satellites, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity<\/b> aimed at the country\u2019s technological upgrade of the country in space<\/b>.<\/p>\n
Dimitris Papastergiou<\/b> presented the new national space program \u201cELLAS Space II,\u201d worth 350 million euros<\/b> and spanning four years, marking Greece\u2019s transition to a new phase of space strategy<\/b> with an emphasis on operational satellite capabilities, artificial intelligence<\/b> and advanced systems <a href="https:\/\/tomanifesto.gr\/cybersecurity<\/a><\/b>, as part of efforts to strengthen the national space industry<\/b> and participate in European programs, while the project follows on from the first microsatellite program<\/b> and aims to utilize high-resolution satellites, Earth observation sensors, and secure communications infrastructure<\/b> for critical sectors such as civil protection against natural disasters<\/b>, maritime surveillance, border security, precision agriculture, and the country\u2019s remote regions,<\/b> while simultaneously developing national production lines and aiming to increase Greek participation to at least 50% in relevant projects<\/b>, while simultaneously strengthening Greece\u2019s position in the European space ecosystem and in cutting-edge technologies<\/b> such as post-quantum cryptography<\/b>, autonomous space systems, and the application of supercomputing artificial intelligence<\/b>.<\/p>\n
The launch of the new National Space Program \u201cELLAS Space II,\u201d<\/b> with a total budget of 350 million euros, was announced by the Minister of Digital Governance and Artificial Intelligence<\/b>, Dimitris Papastergiou, during his speech at the event \u201cGreece in Orbit \u2013 Greece in Space: The Next Day\u201d<\/b>.<\/p>\nThe country is entering a new phase of development<\/h3>\n
As he emphasized, following the implementation of the first national microsatellite program, the country is entering a new phase of development for its space capabilities.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe built very important infrastructure with the first national microsatellite program. We put Greece into orbit. Today we are taking the next big step. We are moving from building infrastructure to real, sustainable national capabilities. \u201cWe\u2019re moving from the local league to the Champions League,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n
The \u201cELLAS Space II\u201d will last four years and will be funded by the Recovery Fund, in collaboration with the European Space Agency and the Hellenic Space Agency. It is the successor to the first national space program, with a budget nearly twice as large.<\/p>\n
According to the minister, the new program was designed based on the country\u2019s actual needs and aims to strengthen critical sectors, such as:<\/p>\n
– civil protection against fires and floods,
– maritime surveillance and support for the Coast Guard,
– precision agriculture,
– border security,
– secure satellite communications,
– navigation for the islands and remote areas.<\/p>\n
At the same time, as he pointed out, a key objective is the development of the Greek space industry, with an export-oriented focus.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want to see the Greek space industry become a leader in Europe and export technology and products on a global scale,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n
Dimitris Papastergiou also presented the program\u2019s key technological priorities, which include:<\/p>\n
– high-resolution Earth observation satellites,
– optical, spectral, and thermal sensors,
– radio interference detection systems,
– secure satellite communications,
– advanced navigation systems,
– autonomous space operations and robotic systems in orbit,
= post-quantum cryptography to enhance cybersecurity,
– utilization of artificial intelligence for processing satellite and geospatial data via the national supercomputer \u201cDaedalus.\u201d<\/p>\n
At the same time, he emphasized the need to establish national production lines so that a larger portion of the added value remains in Greece.<\/p>\n
The minister announced that all projects under the program will aim for at least 50% Greek participation, while implementation will take place through open and competitive tenders with the greatest possible participation by Greek industry.<\/p>\n
At the same time, Greece will continue to actively participate in major European space initiatives, such as the Copernicus, Galileo, and the European Space Shield.<\/p>\n
He also made special mention of the ministry\u2019s new educational initiative, the 1st Pan-Hellenic Student Space Program.<\/p>\n
For the first time, middle and high school students from across the country will have the opportunity to design, build, and launch up to eight nanosatellites into orbit, while their schools will serve as ground stations.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want all the children in the country to have the opportunity to dream and reach as high as the human spirit can go,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Concluding his speech, Dimitris Papastergiou emphasized that space policy is a key pillar of the country\u2019s digital transformation.<\/p>\n
