Consequence of political choices<\/strong>, soccer-related clashes<\/strong> and a policy of isolation<\/strong> that ultimately proved costly.<\/span> <\/p>\n

Argentina<\/strong> is today considered one of the greatest soccer powers in the world. However, for nearly a quarter of a century, it was essentially absent from the World Cups<\/strong>. Its absence from the World Cup<\/strong> in Switzerland<\/strong> in 1954<\/strong> was not an isolated incident, but the culmination of a policy<\/strong> and soccer isolation<\/strong> that had already begun in the 1930s<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

It all began in 1938<\/strong>. The Argentine Football Association<\/strong> believed it had priority to host the World Cup<\/strong>, as it was believed that the FIFA<\/strong> would alternate between Europe<\/strong> and South America<\/strong>. However, when France<\/strong> was selected, the reaction was intense. Argentina<\/strong> withdrew from the tournament, despite later attempting unsuccessfully to overturn the decision. Thus, the opportunity was lost to showcase internationally one of the strongest teams of the era, featuring players such as Antonio Sastre<\/strong>, Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Mineggia<\/strong>, and Carlos Peucelle<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

The 1950<\/strong>, at the first postwar World Cup<\/strong>, the absence had different causes. Relations with Brazil<\/strong> were strained, while the country\u2019s president, Juan Domingo Per\u00f3n<\/strong>, did not want to risk a failure that could result in political consequences for his regime. The national team<\/strong> stayed home once again. <\/p>\n

Four years later, the situation had not improved. The strike by soccer players<\/strong> in 1948<\/strong> had triggered a mass exodus of star players to Colombia<\/strong>, while the AFA<\/strong> with other South American federations<\/strong> remained problematic. Players such as Adolfo Pedernera<\/strong>, Alfredo Di Stefano<\/strong>, and Nestor Rossi<\/strong> were outside the federation\u2019s direct control, a fact that exacerbated the isolation<\/strong> of Argentine soccer<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

After the end of the World Cup<\/strong> in Switzerland<\/strong>, the national team coach<\/strong> Guillermo Stabile<\/strong>, top scorer of the World Cup<\/strong> of 1930<\/strong>, stated his opinion in no uncertain terms: the boycott<\/strong> was a mistake, and Argentina<\/strong> could have been a contender. <\/p>\n

The return to the World Cup<\/strong> in 1958<\/strong> did not vindicate those who had opted for isolation<\/strong>. The crushing 6-1<\/strong> defeat by Czechoslovakia<\/strong> revealed just how far behind the country had fallen in relation to European developments<\/strong>. After three decades of introversion<\/strong>, Argentina<\/strong> was forced to admit that political decisions<\/strong> and the soccer egos<\/strong> had cost one of the world\u2019s most talented academies dearly. <\/p>\n
