Five people were arrested for causing fires through negligence and for violations of fire safety laws<\/b> in Fthiotida, Serres, Attica, and Rhodes.<\/p>\n
Specifically, the Investigative Units for Combating Arson Crimes (A.K.A.E.E.) of the Directorate for Combating Arson Crimes (D.A.E.E.) of the Fire Department<\/b>, as part of the investigation into fires and violations of fire safety legislation recorded over the past 24 hours<\/b> in various regions of the country.<\/p>\n
According to the Fire Department, in the first case, the A.K.A.E.E. in Fthiotida <\/b>arrested a 63-year-old man<\/b>, for a fire <\/b>caused by negligence that broke out today at 10:10 a.m. in the Agios Georgios Pelasgia area <\/b>of the Municipality of Stylida, Fthiotida. According to preliminary investigation findings, the fire was caused during work involving a farm tractor and a brush cutter. The 63-year-old was arrested under the procedure for crimes caught in the act.<\/p>\n
In the second case, the A.K.A.E.E. Serres <\/b>proceeded to arrest a foreign national for a fire caused by negligence that broke out yesterday in a rural area of the Municipality of Sintiki, Serres<\/b>. According to the investigation\u2019s findings, the fire<\/b>was caused during work with a combine harvester. As reported by the Fire Department, a total of approximately 20 stremmata of agricultural and forested land, crop residues, farmland with about 100 olive trees, and grassland<\/b> were burned. The man was arrested in the act, and a case file was opened.<\/p>\n
In two additional cases, the A.K.A.E.E. Eastern Attica<\/b> arrested two men <\/b>for violating legislation related to fire safety regulations.<\/p>\n
The first incident was reported today at 12:56 p.m. in the Keratea <\/b>area of Eastern Attica, where a man<\/b>, aged 39, was performing hot work involving a grinder and electric welding.<\/b> The 39-year-old was arrested on the spot and was fined 3,000 euros.<\/p>\n
The second incident occurred at 1:34 p.m. in the Markopoulo area of Eastern Attica, on Artemidos Street, where a 52-year-old man was using an outdoor grill (barbecue)<\/b>, in violation of the fire safety measures in effect due to the risk index. The 52-year-old was arrested on the spot and was fined 3,000 euros.<\/p>\n
In addition, the Dodecanese Fire and Rescue Service arrested a man, aged 56<\/b>, for a fire <\/b>caused by negligence that broke out today in the Theologos area, in the Petaloudes Municipal Unit, within the Municipality of Rhodes<\/b>. According to the preliminary investigation, the 56-year-old left a gasoline-powered pump running\u2014which he was using to irrigate farmland\u2014and left the area, causing the fire to spread to adjacent agricultural and forested areas. As reported by the Fire Department, the fire burned approximately one stremma of agricultural – and forested land. Following consultation with the competent Rhodes prosecutor, a case file was opened, and the 56-year-old was arrested under the flagrante delicto procedure.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Investigative Units for Combating Arson Crimes of the D.A.E.E. are continuing to investigate the causes of the fires that broke out today in various regions of the country.<\/p>\n
It should be noted that from January 1 through June 27, 2026, a total of 484 administrative fines have been imposed, amounting to 552.267.29 euros<\/b>, while 128 arrests have been made under the procedure for offenses caught in the act, of which 120 (93.75%) relate to fires caused by negligence and 8 (6.25%) involved arson.<\/p>\n
As emphasized by the Fire Department, the Arson Crimes Investigation Directorate (DAEE) and the Fire Department\u2019s investigative units remain on high operational alert, conducting intensive inspections and immediately holding those responsible to account whenever violations are detected.<\/p>\n
