<strong data-start=\"1572\" data-end=\"1595\">Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107<\/strong>, announced to his supporters at a pro-government rally in <strong data-start=\"1668\" data-end=\"1681\">Belgrade<\/strong> that he intends to step down from the country\u2019s highest office. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1743\" data-end=\"1934\">     \u201c<strong data-start=\"1744\" data-end=\"1814\">I will be president for only a few weeks, and then I will resign<\/strong>,\u201d he stated, even though his second and final presidential term is set to end in mid-2027. <\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1cdw70\" data-start=\"1936\" data-end=\"2010\">     <strong data-start=\"1939\" data-end=\"2010\">Pressure from the protests and the prospect of a return to the premiership<\/strong> <\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2012\" data-end=\"2264\">     Vucic\u2019s <strong data-start=\"2026\" data-end=\"2038\">decision<\/strong> was announced after about a year and a half of protests that began as a student-led initiative, following the collapse of a canopy at the <strong data-start=\"2201\" data-end=\"2214\">Novi Sad<\/strong> train station\u2014a tragedy that claimed the lives of <strong data-start=\"2247\" data-end=\"2263\">16 people<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2266\" data-end=\"2444\">     The main demand of the protests was the calling of <strong data-start=\"2321\" data-end=\"2340\">early elections<\/strong>, while discussions regarding the Serbian president\u2019s political future had intensified recently. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2446\" data-end=\"2664\">     His latest statements follow recent reports about a possible resignation, as well as rumors that he might return to the position of <strong data-start=\"2592\" data-end=\"2608\">prime minister<\/strong>, a position he held from <strong data-start=\"2643\" data-end=\"2663\">2014 to 2017<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1idbeqs\" data-start=\"2666\" data-end=\"2728\">     <strong data-start=\"2669\" data-end=\"2728\">The election schedule has not yet been set<\/strong> <\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2730\" data-end=\"2931\">     <strong data-start=\"2732\" data-end=\"2755\">Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107<\/strong> has made it clear that he will actively participate in the election campaign, with the aim of supporting the <strong data-start=\"2840\" data-end=\"2869\">Serbian Progressive Party<\/strong> and help ensure its victory in the upcoming elections. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2933\" data-end=\"3160\">     However, he did not announce exactly when he would submit his resignation, nor when the procedures for the <strong data-start=\"3044\" data-end=\"3066\">dissolution of the Parliament<\/strong>, which is a prerequisite for holding <strong data-start=\"3128\" data-end=\"3159\">early parliamentary elections<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3162\" data-end=\"3319\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">     Thus, the timeline for developments remains open for now, with the political scene in <strong data-start=\"3260\" data-end=\"3270\">Serbia<\/strong> entering a period of heightened uncertainty.
