The livestock industry<\/b> in Lesvos<\/b> is under increased surveillance<\/b>, as the spread of foot-and-mouth disease<\/b> has caused severe losses and intense concern in local farmsproduction<\/b>, with the Municipality stepping up controls and calling for immediate cooperation from all stakeholders<\/b> in order to limit the spread of the disease<\/b> and protect the island’s animal production<\/b>.<\/p>\n
The Deputy Minister of Rural Development, Yiannis Andrianos<\/b>, speaking to Eptian News<\/b>, addressed a spirit of cooperation<\/b> to the livestock farmers of Lesvos<\/b>, who continue their movements<\/b> calling for the vaccination of all goats and sheep<\/b> on the island for mouth fever<\/b>.<\/p>\nThe only “weapon” to save the local economy<\/h3>\n
With the situation in northern Lesvos remaining critical (43 cases in 54 units) and the virus making its appearance in the southern part in the Mesotopos area, the deputy minister made it clear that state support is a given, but adherence to scientific protocols is required.<\/p>\n
“Logic must prevail. To prevent the island’s food supply and veterinarians from doing their job is like shooting themselves in the foot,” he said, noting that a full assessment of the situation through blood sampling is the only “weapon” to save the local economy.<\/p>\n
To strengthen controls, it was announced that 20 additional veterinarians would be sent to the island to speed up the blood draws, to make the tests faster so that the fixing can be done.<\/p>\n
One of the burning issues raised by the deputy minister is the export of cheese products, which remain stranded due to the measures. He revealed that the Veterinary Service has already established a special biosecurity protocol to allow the cheese products to leave the island, but safely.<\/p>\n
“The problem is not the product (cheese) itself, but the transport conditions and packaging to ensure that the virus is not transported off the island,” he explained. The implementation of this framework will allow the safe movement of products, protecting the reputation of Lesvos’ exportable products.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Andrianos referred to the measures announced by Minister Schinas, stressing that there is the financial capacity to fully support the affected people. The aid will cover the cost of fodder, the replacement of lost income and compensation for animals that have died.<\/p>\n
“But they must understand that there is a protocol, there is a framework of the European Union and the European Commission, specific and that is what we are following. We are not doing anything that is beyond the scientific approach,” the deputy minister concluded, urging the agencies and producers to help the agencies complete their work so that the island can be brought out of quarantine as soon as possible.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
