The immediate intervention of the Commission for the doubling of funds in Western Macedonia<\/b>, in view of the final phase of de-lignification, calls for Giorgos Avtias.<\/b><\/p>\n
In a letter to Budget Piot Serafin<\/b> and Economy Vladis Dobrovskis<\/b> commissioners of the European Commission, the ND MEP, following requests from the region, mayors and chambers of commerce, calls for a doubling by 2035 of the Fair Transition Fund and other European funds<\/b>, due to the region’s high dependence on lignite.<\/p>\nThe letter<\/h3>\n
The letter reads as follows:<\/p>\n
“Dear Commissioners,<\/p>\n
In my country, Greece, and in particular in the Region of Western Macedonia, a huge socio-economic adjustment is taking place, due to a change in the production model in energy<\/b>, i.e. energy production with a low lignite footprint.<\/p>\n
Already, the Greek government has institutionalized policies for this transformation, such as the Fair Development Transition<\/b> program, and adopted special tax incentives in lignite areas (Florina, Kozani, Amyndeon, Ptolemaida and Megalopolis in the Peloponnese<\/b>).<\/p>\n
The residents of D. Macedonia, who had a direct and universal occupational dependence on lignite, are looking for new direct and increased financial support, beyond what has been given, in order to attract new investments and create jobs<\/b> in sectors related to clean energy, crafts, trade, agriculture, tourism, technology, health, education and development in general.<\/b><\/p>\n
Western Macedonia, for 70 years, has exploited lignite and supported the economy of the country and the region. It deserves your support. New focused policies are needed, driven by regional and local development.<\/p>\n
Citizens are asking, in addition to what has been allocated from the Greek state budget, for a new strong impetus with additional resources and implementation of the “Delignification Clause”<\/b>. Thus, the transition will be both fair and more efficient for Western Macedonia and its inhabitants:<\/p>\n
After all this, I ask you:<\/p>\n
-Increase the funds until 2035, the Fair Transition Fund and other European resources.<\/p>\n
-Take into account directly the specific disadvantages of the lignite regions and support Western Macedonia substantially.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
