In a lengthy statement to the Parliament<\/b>, the Member of Serres of the New Democracy Tassos Hadjivassiliou<\/b> intervened in the debate on the lifting of his immunity<\/b>, stressing that the case concerning him is not based, according to him, on the actual commission of criminal acts<\/b> but on procedures that never resulted in an illegal outcome<\/b>. He stressed that his request for the waiver of immunity<\/b> is within the logic of full transparency<\/b> and institutional logos<\/b>, while reiterating his trust in the judiciary<\/b>, rejecting any suggestion of his involvement in illegal acts<\/b> or funding<\/b> and insisting that this is a case that, he claims<\/b>, does not involve criminal responsibility<\/b>.<\/p>\n
“I am controlling something that did not happen<\/b>. I have never designed<\/b> or committed an illegal act. I have nothing to do with the illegal actions investigated by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office at OPEKEPE<\/b>,” Member of Parliament for Serres and Secretary of International Relations and European Union of the Southwest, Mr. Tasos Hadjivassiliou<\/b>, speaking in the plenary session of the Parliament<\/b>, during the discussion before the vote<\/b> on the lifting of the asylum<\/b>, stressing at the same time that all this is clear from the transmittal<\/b> of the file that arrived in the Parliament<\/b>.<\/p>\nThe presumption of innocence is at the heart of legal culture<\/h3>\n
Hatzivassiliou said from the outset that he was calling for his immunity to be lifted, noting that “in modern democracies and in societies that draw strength from the rule of law, the presumption of innocence is at the heart of legal culture”. He said that he defends the inalienable right of every citizen, and therefore every politician, not to be judged on the basis of legal speculation, unfounded suspicions or rumours, stressing that “there is no need for more character assassinations, because this logic harms democracy and rationality”.<\/p>\n
In his statement, he made it clear that the case was about the transfer of agricultural rights between spouses, a request he said was legal, humane and submitted for reasons of force majeure due to pregnancy. He stressed that the procedure was followed to the letter, that the request was ultimately rejected by the competent authorities and that, therefore, it was being reviewed for an act that had not taken place. He stressed that in no case did he attempt, plan or perform any illegal act.<\/p>\n
He placed particular emphasis on the Prosecutor’s Office transmittal itself, which, he said, showed that there was no principle of committing the crime of fraud related to grants, while also highlighting the absence of any form of consideration, so there was no question of active or passive bribery. He also relied on the Prosecutor’s statement that he did not go beyond the stage of non-bailable preparatory acts and did not reach the level of the executing authority in order to establish, even in the form of an attempt, the offence of fraud against the interests of the European Union.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, Mr. Hadjivassiliou noted that, based on the case file, he has nothing to do either with illegal subsidies or with pasture land and stressed that he is unequivocally asking for the lifting of his immunity not as a fugitive, but to close this case once and for all. He stressed that he is not afraid and that he has full confidence in the Greek Justice and its officials.<\/p>\n
He concluded by saying that he honors the role of the MP and the trust of the citizens of Serres: “Representation means presence in the daily life of citizens. This presence of the MP is not an interference but a duty.
