The new economic measures<\/strong> announced by the Prime Minister to support<\/b> mainly vulnerable social groups were mentioned by the Deputy Prime Minister Thanasis Kontogeorgis<\/strong>, in an interview with ERTnews. <\/p>\n

When asked about this, Kontogeorgis said that “the policy of taking this new package of aid measures is part of a framework of fiscal responsibility as well as an absolute awareness of the social need, in the midst of a new crisis that is being added, for the growth dividend to be returned to society.”<\/p>\n

These measures did not come from over-taxation<\/h3>\n

The government, through targeted, permanent and temporary measures, seeks to avoid strong inflationary pressures, reduce burdens, strengthen and support income especially for the most vulnerable social groups. <\/p>\n

“These measures did not come from overtaxation. Instead, through consistent and prudent management, by increasing employment and investment, cutting spending and strengthening tax compliance, the government is directing the excess growth to where it is needed: to support pensioners, the middle class, families with children, people living in rent,” he said.<\/p>\n

Following today’s announcement, the beneficiaries of the permanent measures, namely pensioners, families with children and renters, add up to more than 3.3 million Greek citizens. “It is a comprehensive policy. No economy will remain unaffected by the current developments. But the government is doing its part – both to support our fellow citizens and to safeguard the fiscal stability and prospects of the economy,” the deputy minister added.<\/p>\n

“An opportunity is given to restart both individuals and businesses”<\/h3>\n

With the new private debt measures, according to Mr. Kontogeorgis, there is an opportunity for a restart for both individuals and businesses, as these (measures) help to settle debts and provide economic relief from the inflationary effects of the war. “Improving the position of our fellow citizens and protecting them from the crisis is our top priority. With this in mind, we are proceeding optimistically, coherently, step by step and seriously,” the Deputy Minister concluded.<\/p>\n

What he said about the lifting of the immunity of the 13 MPs of the ruling party<\/h3>\n

Then, referring to the voting procedure for lifting the immunity of the 13 MPs of the ruling party, the Deputy Prime Minister made it clear that there is no question of internal party discipline, as this is an issue on which MPs vote according to their conscience. “The MPs themselves – and to their credit – asked for the lifting of immunity and as the vote proved things are moving forward,” he said.<\/p>\n

Asked about the meetings of the European Public Prosecutor, Laura Covesi, in Athens with members of the government, the deputy minister recalled that Greece has supported the institution of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, as it was one of the first countries to incorporate the regulation of its operation into its national law, stressing that “the government demonstrates institutional commitment to the rule of law”. In this context, the government is seeking to move forward with a legislative initiative to ensure that cases involving political figures proceed quickly so that no threat or shadow is cast over persons who may ultimately bear no responsibility. This was, moreover, the meaning of the Prime Minister’s reference, who in an institutional manner called for speeding up the procedures.<\/p>\n

“The government has never questioned the opinion polls”<\/h3>\n

In addition to the institutional management of the issues, the Deputy Prime Minister also referred to the political dimension as reflected in the opinion polls. “The government has never questioned the opinion polls, which currently reflect a certain situation, the predominance of New Democracy. We do not dwell on this. But what matters is the qualitative characteristics. There are our fellow citizens who are waiting for the results of our policy, a course correction where necessary, and a proposal for the continuation,” he concluded.
