{"id":2437,"date":"2026-04-24T17:32:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-24T14:32:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.tomanifesto.gr\/?p=2437"},"modified":"2026-04-24T17:32:00","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T14:32:00","slug":"nato-on-spain-the-founding-treaty-does-not-provide-for-suspension-or-expulsion-of-membership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/en.tomanifesto.gr\/?p=2437","title":{"rendered":"NATO on Spain: &#8220;The founding treaty does not provide for suspension or expulsion of membership&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <b>NATO <\/b>has clarified that there is no provision for <b>suspension or expulsion of a member state<\/b>, after a <a href=\"https:\/\/tomanifesto.gr\/dimosieyma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">publication reported that the <b>United States <\/b>was considering targeting <b>Spain <\/b>because of its stance in the war with <b>Iran<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>According to information reported by <strong>Reuters<\/strong>, a US official said an internal Pentagon <strong>email<\/strong> suggested possible measures to punish allies who, in Washington&#8217;s view, have not adequately supported the US campaign.<\/p>\n<p>The same message also referred to the need to reconsider the US stance on the <strong>UK&#8217;s claim to the Falkland Islands<\/strong> in the South Atlantic, which are also claimed by Argentina.<\/p>\n<p>A NATO official, speaking to <strong>BBC<\/strong>, stressed that the alliance&#8217;s<strong> founding treaty<\/strong> &#8220;does not provide for any <strong>procedure of suspension or expulsion of membership.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the same time, Spanish Prime Minister <strong>Pedro Sanchez<\/strong> dismissed the <strong>publication<\/strong>, stressing that his government does not rely on unofficial leaks. &#8220;We do not work on the basis of emails. We are working on official documents and official positions taken, in this case, by the government of the <strong>United States<\/strong>,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p> <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong> has repeatedly <strong>criticized<\/strong> the <strong>NATO allies<\/strong> for their stance, accusing them of an unwillingness to take a more active role after the US and Israeli attacks on Iran in late February and Tehran&#8217;s subsequent restrictions on shipping through the <strong>Sea of Hormuz.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Spain has refused to allow<\/strong> the use of a<\/strong> airbases<\/strong> on its territory for operations against Iran.
