The aim is to restart funding to his country. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"634\" data-end=\"759\">&#8220;There is no time to lose,&#8221; he said, at a time when the Hungarian economy has been stagnating for the past three years. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"761\" data-end=\"1038\">The new prime minister has pledged a more <strong data-start=\"804\" data-end=\"828\">pro-European line<\/strong> than his predecessor, Viktor Orban. A key aim is to unblock billions of euros that were pledged over concerns about the <strong data-start=\"999\" data-end=\"1017\">rule of law<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1025\" data-end=\"1037\">corruption<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1040\" data-end=\"1292\">Mayar is expected to take office in early May. He has already set out four key priorities for immediate action. Among them are strengthening <strong data-start=\"1193\" data-end=\"1207\">transparency<\/strong>, protecting <strong data-start=\"1225\" data-end=\"1243\">freedom of the press<\/strong> and ensuring <strong data-start=\"1265\" data-end=\"1291\">academic freedom<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<figure>\n<div class=\"embed-responsive\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p data-start=\"1294\" data-end=\"1459\">The pressure is on. Hungary is at risk of losing around <strong data-start=\"1355\" data-end=\"1371\">10 billion euros<\/strong> of European pandemic funds as the deadline passes at the end of August. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1461\" data-end=\"1605\">Following his election victory, Mayer expressed hope for a <strong data-start=\"1529\" data-end=\"1550\">political deal<\/strong> with the European Union as early as his first visit. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1607\" data-end=\"1760\">Orban&#8217;s previous government was in open conflict with the European Union over issues of <strong data-start=\"1729\" data-end=\"1739\">institution<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1744\" data-end=\"1759\">rights<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1762\" data-end=\"2096\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">The new government is based on a strong parliamentary majority, following the victory of the Tisza party in the 12 March elections. This gives room for changes in the legislation.
