Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with Executive Vice President of the European Commission, responsible for the Clean, Fair and Competitive Transition, Teresa Ribera<\/b>, at the Mansion House.<\/p>\n

The meeting discussed EU policies on the green transition<\/b> and the proposals put forward by the European Commission to address the consequences of the energy crisis.<\/p>\n

The Prime Minister stressed, among other things, the need for a realistic approach to the green transition to ensure the competitiveness of the European economy and protect social cohesion. <\/b>He called the current period very interesting, in which many discussions are taking place on the path towards further carbonisation of our economy and noted: “When I look at the figures, I think Greece has done an impressive job in terms of reducing carbon emissions compared to 1990. <\/b>Together with other southern countries, including Spain, we are a pioneer in renewable energy.”<\/p>\n

The Prime Minister referred to the impact on energy prices and stressed:<\/p>\n

“The real impact is visible in electricity prices. They are much lower than those of our neighbours. We have become net exporters of electricity. We used to be net importers.We have completely moved away from lignite, which is not the case for many other European countries.<\/b>And we continue, of course, to use natural gas for our baseload energy. So I think we have every reason to continue on this path. It’s good for the environment, it’s good for climate change, but it also makes sense from an economic point of view.”<\/p>\n

And he concluded: “But there is a general feeling – and I agree with it – in the European Council that we need to look at reducing carbon emissions in the context of supporting our industry and maintaining social cohesion.”<\/p>\n

For her part, Ribera welcomed what Mitsotakis said and said that “today we realise that we are not only talking about climate reasons, but also about economic performance, economic security and the competitiveness of our industry in the future. And the secret is how we can continue to drive a process, taking into account different circumstances as they may evolve, to ensure that we don’t lose the direction we are going in, but that we introduce the adjustments and flexibility that we may need<\/b>.”<\/p>\n

He said that Greece has done a very impressive job over the last 20 years through deep system transformation<\/b> and noted: “There are areas where unity and consistency, globally, as well as providing space for multilateralism and maintaining context, are particularly difficult at the moment. So we are trying to figure out how to reconcile this dual perspective. Because I think it is also important to preserve and defend the fact that Europe, at the moment, is a reference point not only for European public opinion or European industrialists, but also for others<\/b>, and to show how we can consistently address the different challenges. Something that is not easy when others are not so much in favour of cooperation, but probably have a more transactional perspective on how to use their tools.”<\/p>\n

In a post on social media, the prime minister said: “I met today with the European Commission’s Executive Vice President for Clean, Fair and Competitive Transition, Teresa Ribera. We had the opportunity to discuss EU policies on green transition.” <\/p>\n
