The Minister of Culture<\/b> Lina Mendoni had a working meeting with World Jewish Restitution Organization (WJRO) President Gideon Taylor<\/b> and Chief Operating Officer Mark Weitzman<\/b>, <\/b>presence of the President of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece (KISC)David Saliell and representatives of the Embassy of the United States of America in Athens.<\/b><\/p>\n

According to today’s announcement by the YWPSO<\/b>, the Lina Mendoni thanked the representatives of the POPA for their assistance in the successful outcome of the return of 91 Jewish relics from Poland<\/b>, which were stolen from Greek synagogues by the German occupation forces during World War II<\/b> and are now kept at the Jewish Museum of Greece (JMG).<\/p>\n

For their part, both Gideon Taylor and Mark Weitzman expressed their great appreciation for the actions of the Ministry of Culture<\/b> and said they looked forward to continued cooperation between the two sides, particularly on issues related to investigating the provenance of Jewish artifacts owned by museums around the world. The Minister of Culture said that Greek museums apply, on the basis of the International Conventions<\/b> and the Archaeological Law, standard procedures for the documentation and verification of the origin of their exhibits, which, as good practices, Greece can propose to other cultural organizations.<\/p>\n

Lina Mendoni referred to the recent designation of the Karya Railway Station, in Fthiotida, as a historical site of Holocaust remembrance in Greece, noting that the studies for the restoration of the station and its operation as an exhibition space to honour the memory of the victims of the Nazis in the area have already been initiated. <\/p>\n

He also referred to the progress made in the construction of the Holocaust Museum in Thessaloniki, part of whose budget comes from the POCA, stressing the need to preserve and promote the historical memory of the victims of the Holocaust. The ‘Josephus’ project of the Jewish Communities of Greece also contributes to this. It is a digital repository with more than 212,000 unique items and over 2,000,000 digital downloads, which was made available to the public <\/b>a few days ago. Finally, he invited the POCA to actively participate in the next Cultural Heritage School conference, organized by the Ministry of Culture in cooperation with the State Department, the US Embassy in Athens and ICOM.<\/p>\n

After the workshop, a short ceremony followed at the National Gallery<\/b>, with the presentation of important relics recently returned from Poland to Greece and kept at the Jewish Museum. <\/p>\n
