Trump-Putin conversation<\/h3>\n
Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin yesterday and told reporters that they discussed the idea of “a small ceasefire.”<\/p>\n
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said today that the truce would cover May 9, the anniversary of the defeat of the German Nazis in World War II, but the exact timing has yet to be determined.<\/p>\n
“We will clarify what exactly it is about – a few hours of security for a parade in Moscow or something more,” Zelensky said of the ceasefire proposal.<\/p>\n
“Our proposal is a long-term ceasefire, reliable and guaranteed security for people and a lasting peace. Ukraine is ready to work in this direction in any decent and effective format,” he said in the post on the X platform.<\/p>\n
The Russian ploy<\/h3>\n
Last year Putin declared a 72-hour ceasefire to mark the 80th anniversary of victory in Europe in World War II. It had not been agreed with Kiev, which called it a ploy and accused Russia of violating its own ceasefire hundreds of times.<\/p>\n
Peskov said Putin had already made the decision on the latest proposed cease-fire and that it would go ahead, although some kind of response is expected from Kiev.<\/p>\n
The Soviet Union, of which both Russia and Ukraine were parts, lost 27 million people in World War II. It is the highest loss of any country.<\/p>\n
Russia has announced that this year’s Red Square parade will be shorter than in previous years, without the usual display of weapons.<\/p>\n
The Kremlin attributed its decision to hold a shorter parade to what it claimed was a terrorist threat from Ukraine, which in recent weeks has stepped up attacks deep inside Russia, while Moscow’s forces have made only incremental progress on the battlefront.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
