The Iranian side now appears willing to sit at the negotiating table without the immediate condition of lifting the naval blockade, while revealing as central issues both the operation of the Strait of Hormuz and its controversial nuclear program. The move is interpreted as an attempt to decompress a prolonged stalemate that has taken a significant toll on the country’s economy, but also as a tactical maneuver in a complex diplomatic game with intense economic and energy waves at the global level.

Tehran delivered its revised proposal to end the war to Washington today, leaving room for compromise in an attempt to restart talks and end a stalemate that is proving particularly costly for its economy.

Distant on key issues

However, the two sides remain far apart on key issues such as the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and Tehran’s nuclear program, according to sources familiar with the negotiations cited by the Wall Street Journal, suggesting that the talks are still walking a tightrope. At the same time, Arab media reported that Pakistani mediators have asked Donald Trump not to rush to a new military option, at least until next week, as cards may be put on the table that could lead to a diplomatic solution.

“They want to make a deal, but I’m not satisfied,” the U.S. president told reporters on Friday, commenting on the new Iranian proposal. “We’ll see what happens.”

Tehran’s proposal takes a step toward the U.S. by proposing to discuss its terms for opening the Strait of Hormuz at the same time as U.S. guarantees to end attacks and relax the blockade of Iranian ports, according to the same sources.

Previously, Iran had been asking the US to lift the blockade as a precondition for talks and agree on the terms of ending the war before any discussion of the Straits’ management and its nuclear program.

The new proposal also stipulates that issues related to Iran’s nuclear program will be discussed in exchange for the lifting of U.S. sanctions.

New negotiations

According to WSJ sources, Tehran has informed mediators that it is ready to sit at the negotiating table in Pakistan early next week if Washington shows a positive attitude toward the new proposal.

“I think it aligns everyone’s motivations, as both the U.S. and Iran could reap some limited economic relief while postponing more difficult and time-consuming issues,” Richard Nephew, a former senior U.S. negotiator with Iran and current Columbia University fellow, told the newspaper.

Iranian state media confirmed that the country had submitted a new proposal to the mediators and said it was willing to return to diplomacy if the U.S. moderates its rhetoric.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the details of the proposal, and the White House declined to comment.

“We do not comment on private diplomatic talks. President Trump has made it clear that Iran can never acquire a nuclear weapon and negotiations are ongoing to ensure the short- and long-term national security of the United States,” White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly said.

The latest diplomatic move comes after a protracted standoff in which Iran refused to send a delegation for a second round of talks in Pakistan last week, while the two sides intensified an economic conflict in the waters around Iran.

Leverage levers

Tehran has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz for weeks, carrying out attacks on tankers and other ships, restricting access to a critical route through which about a fifth of the world’s oil supplies pass.

In response, the U.S. has imposed a blockade on Iranian ports and ships, seeking to hit Tehran’s main source of revenue and force concessions.

According to U.S. officials, Trump has asked his associates to prepare for a prolonged blockade of Iran. The mutual pressure has limited the country’s exports and imports and kept the price of Brent oil above $100 a barrel.

Tehran has made it clear that it is not willing to make significant compromises on its nuclear program. In a proposal submitted last weekend, it said it would discuss its nuclear program only after all other issues related to the Straits and the end of the war are resolved.

The U.S. is seeking that Iran halt nuclear fuel enrichment for up to 20 years and hand over its stockpiles of highly enriched uranium, a demand Tehran opposes.

Despite the impasse, the two sides continue to exchange messages through various mediators, including Pakistan, Qatar, Egypt and Turkey. Neither side has ruled out talks, though hopes for a meeting in Pakistan last weekend did not materialize.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi traveled twice to Islamabad, but Trump canceled his close associates’ mission as Tehran did not confirm it was ready to attend.

On Friday, the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control warned shipowners not to pay fees to Iran for safe passage through the Straits, either directly or through informal exchanges or donations to Iranian organizations such as the Iranian Red Crescent.

</html

Tehran appears ready to negotiate with the US without lifting the blockade, putting the Strait of Hormuz and …

[4

post-3603","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-world
["GET
