{"id":4458,"date":"2026-05-07T14:12:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-07T11:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.tomanifesto.gr\/?p=4458"},"modified":"2026-05-07T14:12:00","modified_gmt":"2026-05-07T11:12:00","slug":"chantaios-global-effort-to-locate-those-who-disembarked-from-the-cruise-ship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/en.tomanifesto.gr\/?p=4458","title":{"rendered":"Chantaios: global effort to locate those who disembarked from the cruise ship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Countries around the world are trying to locate people who disembarked from the <b>cruise ship<\/b> MV Hondius, on which a <b>hantavirus outbreak<\/b> has broken out, to prevent the further spread of the disease.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, a <b>female passenger on the Dutch airline KLM<\/b>is being treated in an Amsterdam hospital with possible symptoms. <\/p>\n<p><b>A total of three people &#8211; a Dutch couple and a German woman &#8211; aboard the MV Hondius have died after being infected with hantavirus.<\/b>Eight people are believed to have been infected, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).<\/p>\n<p>The government of <b>The Netherlands<\/b> has announced that about 40 passengers on the cruise ship disembarked in St Helena, where the ship was stopping before the outbreak broke out. <b>It is currently unknown where many of these people are. <\/b><\/p>\n<p>One of those passengers was the 69-year-old wife of the Dutchman who died on the MV Hondius on April 11. This woman became ill and died in Johannesburg before she could make it back to the Netherlands. <\/p>\n<p>The <b>KLM<\/b> airline said yesterday that a passenger was removed from a flight on the airline&#8217;s April 25 flight from Johannesburg to Amsterdam due to her deteriorating health condition. The passenger later died. &#8220;Due to the health condition of the passenger at that time, the crew decided not to allow her to travel on this flight,&#8221; the airline explained. &#8220;After the passenger was disembarked, the flight departed for the Netherlands],&#8221; it added. <\/p>\n<p>The Dutch health authorities for precautionary reasons have begun contacting all passengers on the flight in question, KLM noted. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile today, according to Dutch station RTL, a KLM flight attendant who came into contact with the woman has been taken to a hospital in <b>Amsterdam<\/b> after showing possible, mild symptoms of a chantavirus infection. <\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the Dutch Ministry of Health explained that the woman is currently undergoing tests to determine if she is infected with hantavirus. <\/p>\n<p>In addition, <b>French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot<\/b> said that a French citizen has been in contact with a person who has contracted hantavirus, but he is not showing symptoms at this time. <\/p>\n<p>One man is being treated in <b>Johannesburg<\/b>, another in <b>Zurich<\/b> and three suspected cases have been airlifted off the ship to Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The strain of chantavirus that has been identified in those confirmed to be infected is the Andean strain, which is transmitted from person to person through close and prolonged contact, experts stress. <\/p>\n<h3>Awake<\/h3>\n<p><b>However, health authorities around the world have been put on alert.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The Dutch couple who died due to the chantavirus had been in <b>Latin America<\/b> since late November, traveling for several months to <b>Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay<\/b>, returning to Argentina in late March to board a ship on April 1.<\/p>\n<p>Hantavirus is endemic in some areas of Argentina, particularly in the Andes, with at least about sixty cases recorded annually in recent years. It spreads mainly through rodents, infecting humans through contact with rats or mice, or their urine, faeces and or saliva.
