The serious accident involving the 12-year-old in Aspropyrgos appears to be accelerating decisions on a new, stricter traffic framework, with measures including age restrictions, compulsory insurance, severe fines, speed checks and possible vehicle identification. The changes being considered are expected to affect both private users and rental companies, in an attempt to put an end to the uncontrolled use of electric skates on the roads.

There is a strong concern over the number of violations and ongoing accidents involving electric scooters, according to ERTnews.gr, after the accident that occurred on Thursday morning (07/05) in Aspropyrgos, with the 12-year-old boy who was dragged by a passing vehicle and is fighting for his life in the Intensive Care Unit of “Aglaia Kyriakou”.

The tightening

However, it looks like electric scooters will soon be a thing of the past for minors and the rules for their use by adults will also be tightened.

In particular, according to information from the relevant ministries and what the Minister of Civil Protection Michael Chrysochoidis has said, a universal ban on the use of electric skates for drivers under the age of 18 is initially being considered.

Second, mandatory skate insurance for civil liability, covering the driver both if he or she is injured and if they injure someone else.

Thirdly, fines will be imposed on violators as well as on the companies renting these skates.

There will also be a “speed limiter” on the skates, but in case someone “tampers” with it in order to move faster, there will also be a fine.

Among other things, it is being considered to allow skates only on small roads, where the speed limit is 30 kilometres per hour, but also to have a way of identifying the vehicle, such as a registration plate, while as far as drivers are concerned, it is being considered to get some kind of driving certification.

The 12-year-old won his first “battle”

The 12-year-old who had an accident with his scooter in Aspropyrgos underwent a long surgery, in order for doctors to treat the severe head injuries he suffered.
