The luxury cruise ship MV Hondius<\/strong>, causing alarm to the health authorities of Spain. <\/p>\n

The arrival of that ship comes nearly a month after the death of a passenger from a rare strain of the Andesian Hantavirus<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

Thankfully, so far, none of the passengers have shown symptoms of infection. However, they are all considered high-risk contacts as a precautionary measure and will undergo specialised medical checks by the Spanish authorities to establish that they remain asymptomatic. <\/p>\n

The disembarkation was organised with strict planning. Passengers are transferred from the ship to land in small boats and then taken by sealed buses to the island’s main airport and then depart on flights to their home countries. <\/p>\n

The operation is described by Spain’s health minister as “unprecedented”, with 23 countries participating in total to prevent any possibility of the virus spreading, but also to calm the reactions of local residents. <\/p>\n

The president of the Canary Islands<\/strong> appeared particularly concerned and said he “will not calm down” until all passengers and crew have left the island. <\/p>\n

“The risk of transmission for the general population is low,” Spain’s Health Minister Monica Garcia reiterated on Saturday (9\/5). She then said: “We believe that scaremongering, misinformation and confusion are contrary to the basic principles of maintaining public health.” <\/p>\n

At the southern port of Tenerife<\/strong>, where the disembarkation is taking place, security measures have been significantly stepped up. Military police and special disaster response teams have deployed large reception tents, while access to the waterfront remains strictly limited. <\/p>\n

The Spanish civilians on board will be flown to Madrid<\/strong>, where they will be placed under mandatory quarantine at the Gomez Ulla military hospital. However, it is not yet clear how long the quarantine will last, as this particular virus can have an incubation period of up to nine weeks. <\/p>\n

The head of the World Health Organization<\/strong>, Tedros Adanom Gebrejesus, is also in Tenerife<\/strong>, who is closely monitoring the landing operation who praised the Spanish authorities for their “strong and effective response” to the outbreak. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
