The anniversary of 90 years since the death of Eleftherios Venizelos<\/strong> was commemorated with great solemnity in the capital of the United States, as part of the activities organized by the World Council of Cretans<\/strong> for the national leader.<\/p>\n

The events began on Thursday, May 7, in front of the historic statue of Freytherios Venizelos<\/strong>, which stands outside the Greek embassy in Washington<\/strong>. The work belongs to the great sculptor Giannis Pappas<\/strong> and is one of the most famous sculptures created in honor of the great politician.<\/p>\n

The Ambassador of Greece to the United States, Antonis Alexandridis<\/strong>, as well as the President of the World Council of Cretans and President of the Branch of the Foundation for Studies and Research “Eleftherios K. Venizelos”, Nikolaos Kastrinakis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

As noted by Mr. Kastrinakis, “The wreath was placed on the statue of Eleftherios Venizelos, a work of the great sculptor Yannis Pappas, who created numerous statues of Venizelos throughout Greece, of particular artistic and historical value.”<\/p>\n

At the same time, he recalled that this statue is a smaller-scale version of the statue in the Park of Eleftheria<\/strong> in Athens, near the American Embassy, while the only identical copy is housed in the Benaki Museum<\/strong>. He also said that the work was restored in 2024 at the initiative of the Branch.<\/p>\n

The ceremony was attended by Greece’s consul in Washington, D.C., Michalis Skopelitis<\/strong>, the defense attach\u00e9s of the Greek Armed Forces, representatives of the Pagretan Union of America<\/strong>, as well as members of the Greek community.<\/p>\n

A reception followed at the Embassy residence, where Ambassador Antonis Alexandridis<\/strong> spoke about Eleftherios Venizelos’ enduring presence in Greek history.<\/p>\n

“Eleftherios Venizelos remains the key shaper of modern Greek history and we always remember him as a symbol of wisdom, democracy and dedication to duty,” he said.<\/p>\n

During the event, Mr. Kastrinakis presented an honorary award to the Greek Ambassador, while honorary coins of veterans of the PEA were also awarded to the Defence Attach\u00e9s for their contribution.<\/p>\n

The anniversary activities continued on Friday, May 8 at the Hellenic Center<\/strong>, where a lecture was held on “Transforming a Nation | Eleftherios Venizelos 1864 – 1936”.<\/p>\n

The event was attended by, among others, the historians of the American Consul in Smyrna during the period of the Catastrophe, Dr. Ismeni Lamb<\/strong> and Dr. Christopher Lamb<\/strong> of Georgetown University<\/strong>, representatives of the Greek community and numerous expatriates.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
