Perhaps because, he said, he didn’t close them himself when he became prime minister.

The former prime minister, former president and former Syriza MP appears not only to have a short memory but also to be provocative on an issue that, if anything, many – if not most – of the country’s citizens are unlikely to forget.

The reason for this is the banks that, before he took power in 2015, he had declared an “enemy” of the citizens – along with the… foreigners of the troika – and subsequently, as prime minister, he legislated in order for funds to enter them and buy red loans, and even to proceed with electronic auctions.

He has gone so far as to make it an individual offence to obstruct the auctions, and his former partner, with whom he was going to Moscow to meet Putin, Panagiotis Lafazanis, has a lot to say on the subject.

But that’s not where the issue lies. The issue is that Alexis Tsipras, once with DHH, once with the banks, is attempting a return to the political centre stage by moving further to the left than before. The rebranding is long over and those who attempted it are probably now tearing up their communication degrees.

Alexis Tsipras said in an interview that he made a mistake by not shutting down the banks when he became prime minister the day after his election victory in January 2015. And that, if anything, says it all. As well as that he led the country to the brink of collapse, resulting in the closure of banks, the imposition of capital controls and Greek citizens forming queues in front of ATMs to withdraw 60 euros.

Now he is denouncing what he himself did. From the deferred tax, which was implemented by an amendment of his government in March 2017, to the entry of funds and the buyout of red loans, to the auctions. And he gives the finger to the government and the banks that implemented what he legislated as PM of the PFA (First Time Left).

He also raises the issue of… a patriotic tax that they will pay when he becomes prime minister again because he will… convince them, just as he possibly convinced the lenders by beating the drums to get the markets to dance.

Alexis Tsipras appears unrepentant. And he comes back with the same destructive and divisive rhetoric. The problem is that Nikos Androulakis is using the same tactics in their race for second place in the elections. And so far so good and their right. It’s just that the citizens are once again faced with a spectacle and an effort through whichthey seek to create an extremely negative climate for themselves and even more so for the country.

Alexis Tsipras is obsessed with the banks.
