The event showcased naval tradition as a key pillar of national identity and historical continuity, with Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendias stressing that the sea has been and remains a force of culture, extroversion and national power. The maritime tradition is a force of self-awareness, education and responsibility for the future. This was stressed, among other things, by the Minister of National Defence, Nikos Dendias, in his address at the ceremony of handing over the submarine “Protys” S113 as a museum, which took hour tonight at the Naval Tradition Park in Flisvos of Paleo Faliro.

Communication, trade and extroversion

The submarine museum was donated by shipowner Aris Theodorides. The donor was honoured with the rank of Rear Admiral (Retired).

“Responsibility towards the nation is not exhausted in words but confirmed by actions. Deeds and actions honour the past. The naval tradition of Greece does not belong to the past. It belongs to the future,” Dendias stressed.

Referring to the sea, he stressed that “it has been a field of communication, trade, extroversion and the struggle for freedom throughout time.”

“From antiquity to modern times, the maritime tradition has shaped the economic power, the cultural radiance and the defensive status of the nation,” he explained.

On the presence of four iconic ships (the battleship “Georgios Averoff”, the trireme battleship “Olympias”, the “Hellas Liberty” and the submarine “Protis”) in the Naval Tradition Park, Dendias said that “it constitutes a unified narrative of Greek seamanship”, adding: “From ancient naval power and the Balkan Wars, to merchant shipping and the modern operational history of the Navy, these ships are not just exhibits. They are evidence of national continuity.”

The Minister of National Defence made a special reference to the battleship Averoff, describing it as a symbol of the battles of Elli and Lemnos and of national integration, as well as to the ship’s commander Sophocles Dousmani, stressing that “he highlighted the human factor behind the great historical moments”.

For the honorary distinction to the shipowner, Aris Theodorides, Mr. Dendias said that it reflects “not only the practical support which he has provided to the Navy, but also his help in something much broader: the preservation and promotion of national memory, historical continuity, and the tradition of our country at sea.”

Tasoulas’ placement

For his part, the President of the Republic, Constantine Tasoulas, noted: “We greet with emotion in the person of Mr Theodorides this coincidence of nobility and tradition.”

He explained that the submarine Proteus is not being decommissioned but “changing form” with a second life “above sea level”.

The President of the Republic also said that the power of this land “belongs to the sea”, adding: “Greek shipowners do a lot for our country. We must embrace technology with national unanimity, to have means as advanced as the ‘Proteus’ had in its time.”

In his address, the Chief of the Naval General Staff, Vice Admiral Demetrios – Eleftherios Kataras, noted that the submarine “Proteus” S-113 is “a living symbol of modern naval history and the timeless relationship of Hellenism with the sea.”

Referring to the submarine’s “new mission” as a museum, he explained that it aims to preserve historical memory, but also “to pay tribute to the crews of the submarines and to educate future generations.”

</html

Submarine “Protis” S113 is handed over to the Naval Tradition Park of Flisvos as a museum, with emphasis on the naval heritage and national continuity. With …

[3

post-4965","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-politics
["GET
