The CEO<\/b> of Metron Analysis<\/b> defends the scientific methods of research<\/b> and warns of legal consequences<\/b>.<\/p>\n

A head-on clash<\/b> broke out between the head of Metron Analysis<\/b>, Strato Fanara<\/b>, and PASOK<\/b>, against the backdrop of the reliability of polling methods<\/b>. <\/p>\n

In a particularly sharp post, Fanaras<\/b> accused the party of Charilaou Trikoupis<\/b> of “unintelligible and contradictory arguments<\/b>“, responding to criticisms the industry has been receiving regarding vote estimation and reduction<\/b>. <\/p>\n

The experienced pollster clarified that these techniques are international statistical practice and not “magic”, while he mockingly asked why PASOK prefers to focus on the voting intention (which shows it at 11%) instead of the final estimate<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Mr. Fanara’s statement took a personal tone, as he denounced that members of the movement called those who apply the reduction<\/b> “crooks”, even warning that “the fact that they escaped lawsuits at the last minute should not be taken as a certainty for the future<\/b>“. <\/p>\n

Closing his scathing intervention, he urged PASOK’s “neocon communicators”<\/b> to educate themselves on the difference between intention and vote estimation, referring them to his colleague Kostas Panagopoulos of ALCO<\/b>, which PASOK itself recently invoked. <\/p>\n

The post by Fanaras<\/b> is detailed:<\/p>\n

“So the attacks by an expanding circle of PASOK cadres on the polls continue through a series of unintelligible and contradictory arguments.
Their latest argument is that the company ALCO of the amiable Kostas Panagopoulos does not make a reduction “because no accurate conclusions can be drawn about the final distribution”. Ibid. So let’s look at the issues briefly.<\/p>\n

1. The main problem in their case is not methodological. It’s that some of them have called those who do an extrapolation of voting intention Fraudsters. Let’s not take the fact that they escaped lawsuits at the last minute as a certainty for the future.<\/p>\n

2. Vote estimation and vote extrapolation is done in all countries of the world and by almost all of the major polling companies because they are based on simple or complex statistical techniques and not on the “magic” of pollsters. Because apart from the primary questions (e.g. who is ahead), voting intention cannot answer other questions of particular interest to public opinion. For example, the voting intention says that ND is leading with e.g. 11% but it does not say whether, given the current data, it could get self-reliance. Are we not interested in answering that? Obviously it does. Is there another way to answer the question? No.<\/p>\n

3. But that’s not all. How do we answer the question of what is the likelihood of parties operating at low levels getting above 3% and being in parliament and thus affecting the overall proportions of parliament? Again, the only way there is is by reduction. Isn’t that what the gentlemen are interested in either? Very well but some do care.<\/p>\n

4. And why are they satisfied with the voting intention that says PASOK is at 11%? Do they like that figure? What conclusion do they draw from that number? Is PASOK now above or below its previous performance? What can you say? How do they answer?<\/p>\n

5. I could go on with a number of other arguments. But I had said that I don’t open a dialogue with abusers and unfortunately I already did. I’ll stop here by saying this last thing. On election day what do you think we post when the polls close? Intention or vote estimate. The newbie communicators of PASOK should ask my friend Kostas Panagopoulos.<\/p>\n
