It’s one that most eloquently describes exactly what we lived through back then – and how we escaped the worst of it, of course.

Written by Ersi Papadakis

The journalistic investigation in the TV documentary begins, however, before the first amnesty, when this long adventure essentially began, with the aftermath of the “Greek statistics”.

It was the time when the Europeans exclaimed “The party is over”to the then Finance Minister, Giorgos Papaconstantinou, as in Athens the newly elected government of Giorgos Papandreou was debating in the Council of Ministers whether to give wage and pension increases above or below 2.000 euros instead of concentrating its efforts on settling its fiscal affairs and the double-digit deficit, which was set at 3% in the last budget of the Karamanlis government and revised to 6% before the elections…

What happened, however, at that time turns out to be a misdemeanour compared to what the country experienced under the first Left. Back when Alexis Tsipras was proudly and with ignorance of danger and of the facts themselves declaring that the markets would dance to the rhythm played by the… Greek dulcimers and that he would tear up the memorandum on the peristyle of the Parliament, after having abolished it “with a law and an article”.

When Giannis Varoufakis was recording his counterparts at Eurogroup meetings or when he was chasing away the head of the body, Gerun Dijsselbloem. Or when SYRIZANEL ministers, not only devotees of communism but also Panos Kammenos, squinted – in vain, as it turned out – at Moscow and Vladimir Putin.

All this, of course, would not have happened not only if the large portion of the Cabinet and advisers in Maximos had not been obsessive, but if they had realized the criticality of the situation experienced by the Samaras-Venizelos government a few months earlier.

With the negotiations taking place in… underground and the issue at stake being Greece’s stay or voluntary exit from the eurozone, in exchange for even a structured “rescue plan”, such as the one Wolfgang Schaeuble had reportedly proposed.

And if the latter was an ardent supporter of Grexit, it is undeniable, and is clear from the TV documentary, that it found equally ardent supporters afterwards with the manipulations of the SYRIZANEL government and especially the megalomania of his then counterpart, G. Varoufakis.

As of 2019 the country may have returned to normality and all this may seem like a nightmare from the past, but as the Varvitsiotis-Dendrinou research proves, it was. History wrote and did not, thankfully, erase Greece, contrary to what Mr. Tsipras recently claimed to justify his refusal to participate in the documentary and essentially avoid apologizing for the situation the country got into under his absolute responsibility.

The argument invoked by the former prime minister and now would-be “party leader” was that he would never legitimise history being written by the powerful. Unfortunately for him, however, everything is accurately recorded and cannot be questioned.

Unfortunately for Mr Tsipras, everything is accurately recorded and cannot be questioned.
The magnitude of the tragedy from which …

[3

post-5248","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-politics
["GET
