It is a case that strikes at the core of the political image that PASOK president Nikos Androulakis has been trying to cultivate for years: that of the “clean“, the “moral” and the politician who supposedly stands above the old system. Only when the reality turns out to be much more complex and politically uncomfortable for Charilaou Trikoupis. Because when a politician who invests daily in rhetoric about transparency, accountability and moral order appears to have a family property that has yielded hundreds of thousands of euros from the Greek Public in the most difficult memorandum period, then the political narrative begins to creak dangerously.

The case reached explosive proportions after the public interventions of Adonis Georgiades, who put not the legality of the procedure but its political and moral footprint in the frame. The government camp is actually trying to deconstruct the moral advantage that PASOK is trying to display, recalling that at the time when Greek society was sinking into crisis, there were political figures who maintained privileged financial relations with the public sector. On the other hand, Harilaou Trikoupis denounces “mud” and “slander”, attempting to turn a politically difficult case into a narrative of allegedly targeting Nikos Androulakis.

The “moral superiority” that collapsed in one post

But the problem for PASOK is that this time the debate is not limited to general political denunciations or a typical party debate. It touches the realm of political credibility. And when a leader of the official opposition appears every day as the honoured champion of ethics and transparency, then it is inevitable that he will be subjected to harsh scrutiny for his own affairs as well.

Adonis Georgiades’ post acted like a spark in a dry political landscape. Within hours, the narrative of the “morally blameless” PASOK began to suffer serious cracks. This is because the case does not concern a distant relative or a vague business activity, but a property directly linked to the family of the PASOK president himself and with a long-standing financial relationship with the Greek state.

PASOK insists that everything was done legally, through tender procedures and without any irregularities. Except that political debate is not always exhausted by legality. There is also the realm of political ethics – exactly where Nikos Androulakis attempted to build his political profile.

And herein lies the great irony of the case. The party that for months has been talking about “transparency”, “cleansing” and “conflict of interest” suddenly finds itself apologising for a case that raises at least awkward political questions. Not necessarily criminal. But politically absolutely existent.

PASOK trapped in its rhetoric

Harilaou Trikoupis tried to respond with the familiar recipe of “political persecution”. Mud-slinging announcements, attacks on the government and invoking justice. However, the party’s defensive stance also betrayed the degree of political pressure.

Because the bottom line is that PASOK has invested almost exclusively in moralistic opposition to the government. Every day it denounces “interconnectedness”, “decadence” and “dark interests”. But when it opens the debate on its own affairs, suddenly everything is dubbed “slander.”

This picture creates an obvious political contradiction. For you cannot appear to be the ultimate honcho of everything and at the same time demand political immunity when the public debate touches on your own affairs. Especially when it comes to economic relations with the public sector at a time when society was being severely tested.

Androulakis and the problem of political authenticity

Nikos Androulakis has attempted in recent years to appear as a politician different from the “old system”. A technocratic, low-key leader, without weights and dependencies. But this particular case traumatises exactly this image.

And this is because it reminds us of something that PASOK has been trying for years to forget: that it was a key pillar of the old political system that ruled the country during the decades of prosperity, clientelism and state dependence. Trying to appear today as a supposedly “new cathartic force” seems increasingly difficult.

And PASOK’s choice to turn every political criticism into a narrative of “targeting” also shows something else: political nervousness. Because if the case was as politically indifferent as they are trying to present it, it would hardly provoke such strong reactions and such aggressive communication defence.

The battle of credibility has just begun

In the coming period the case is expected to continue to poison the political climate. The government sees a great opportunity to damage the moral narrative of PASOK and personally of Nikos Androulakis. On the other hand, Harilaou Trikoupis knows that any shadow around the image of its president could prove to be extremely dangerous politically.

But the key question remains: can a politician who builds a career every day on the complaint of “ethics” convince that his own affairs should be exempt from public scrutiny? Because in politics, sometimes, image often proves stronger even than legal reality.

And right now, the image that is forming for Nikos Androulakis is nothing but politically comfortable.

The conflict between New Democracy and PASOK over the property of the Androulakis family brings to the fore serious political and moral questions about the …

[3

post-5560","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-politics
["GET
