Sharp concern has been caused by new revelations by Volodymyr Zelensky<\/b> about the moves of Russia and Belarus<\/b>, with the Ukrainian president speaking of information indicating preparations for new offensive operations<\/b> in the region. According to Kiev<\/b>, Moscow is attempting to increase the involvement of Alexander Lukashenko’s regime<\/b> in war<\/b>, looking atscenarios that could affect not only the security of Ukraine<\/b> but also stability in NATO’s eastern wing<\/b>. Zelensky’s statements come at a time of heightened geopolitical tension<\/b>, at a time when the Ukrainian armed forces are strengthening defenses in the northern regions and the international community<\/b> is closely following developments around the Moscow-Minsk<\/b> military cooperation.<\/p>\n
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky<\/b> said earlier that Russia is seeking to further involve<\/b> Belarus<\/b> in the war in Ukraine<\/b> and is considering plans for a possible attack either in the north of Ukraine<\/b> or against NATO sites from Belarusian territory, Reuters<\/b> reported.<\/p>\nThe warning<\/h3>\n
In a post on the Telegram app after a meeting with military and Ukrainian intelligence officials, Zelensky said: “We continue to document Russia’s efforts to draw Belarus deeper into the war against Ukraine.”<\/p>\n
He added that Kiev has information about new contacts between Moscow and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko aimed at persuading him to join “new Russian offensive operations.”<\/p>\n
According to the Ukrainian president, Russia is considering operational plans “to the south and north of Belarusian territory”, either in the Chernihiv-Kiev direction in Ukraine or directly against a NATO country from Belarusian territory.<\/p>\n
Zelensky did not provide further details on this information.<\/p>\n
Belarus borders Ukraine to the south, while to the north and west it borders NATO member countries such as Poland, Lithuania and Latvia.<\/p>\n
So far there has been no immediate reaction to Zelensky’s statements from either Russia or Minsk. Moscow is not making public its military plans for the war in Ukraine, which are considered state secrets.<\/p>\n
Lukashenko, one of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s closest allies, had allowed the use of Belarusian territory during Russia’s February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, but did not send Belarusian troops to the front.<\/p>\n
Since then, Minsk has agreed to the deployment of Russian tactical nuclear weapons and Oreshnik supersonic missiles on its territory.<\/p>\n
Zhelensky said last month that Ukrainian intelligence had indications that Russia was making preparations that suggested it would again attempt to involve Belarus in the war, which has now lasted more than four years.<\/p>\n
“Ukraine will undoubtedly defend itself and its people if Alexander Lukashenko makes the wrong choice and decides to support this Russian intention as well,” he said.<\/p>\n
At the same time, the Ukrainian president disclosed that he has instructed the country’s armed forces to prepare a response plan and strengthen defenses in the northern regions of Chernihiv and Kiev.<\/p>\n
