To transform the Civil Protection into a modern national mechanismfor crisis<\/b> management and response<\/a> to risks<\/b> spoke, among others, the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection,Evangelos Tournas<\/b>, in the context of the 16th<\/b> Synod<\/b> of New Democracy.<\/b><\/p>\n
Tournas referred to the decision of the Prime Minister,Kyriakos Mitsotakis,<\/b> in September 2021, to create an autonomous<\/b> Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, with, he said, “clear responsibilities, operational structure and the possibility of coordination<\/b> of all relevant agencies”.<\/p>\n
“From then until today, the Country’s Civil Protection<\/b> has been transformed into a modern national crisis management and hazard response<\/b> mechanism. With alternatives<\/b> in organization, infrastructure<\/b>, means, financing<\/b>, coordination and institutional consolidation,” Mr. Tournas<\/b> noted.<\/p>\n
At the beginning of his speech, Mr. Turnas said:<\/b><\/p>\n<\/p>\n
“I am particularly happy to be here today, at the 16th Congress<\/b> of our party,<\/p>\n
the party that has been identified with metabolism<\/b> and democracy.<\/p>\n
Which included Greece in the European Union<\/b> as an equal partner.<\/p>\n
Which brought strong and stable governments, which worked for progress and prosperity.<\/p>\n
Culminating in the current government<\/b> of Kyriakos Mitsotakis,<\/b> which brought the country out of memoranda<\/b>, and from a bad example in 2019, has a leading role in European events<\/b> and is today a model of recovery<\/b>, progress and stability.”<\/p>\n
As the minister stressed, the country’s security<\/b> is not only about defence<\/b> and policing<\/b> but also “the ability of the state to protect its citizens against the consequences of the climate crisis<\/b>“.<\/p>\n
“It is about preparedness<\/b>, resilience<\/b>, preparedness and immediate response of the mechanism<\/b>,” he stressed.<\/p>\n
At the same time, the minister referred to the reorganization of the Fire Department<\/b>, the restructuring of the General Secretariat for Civil Protection and the upgrading<\/b> of the Voluntary Civil Protection<\/b> through the legislative Regulations<\/b> that have been voted<\/b> while stressing that they have moved to implement an operational doctrine<\/b> that “provides for surveillance and early warning<\/b>, mobilization<\/b> of forces and immediate intervention to suppress the incident in the first instance.”<\/p>\n
According to the minister, a key objective of the ministry was to prevent<\/b> and improve<\/b> resilience<\/b>, an area he said had been “abandoned for decades”.<\/p>\n
He then spoke about the prevention actions<\/b> being implemented, the importance of cleaning<\/b> the land and mentioned the strengthening<\/b> of the Fire Department<\/b>.<\/b><\/p>\n
Speaking about the AIGIS<\/b> program, he referred to “the largest Public Protection<\/b> program ever implemented in our country”, worth more than 2 billion euros,<\/b> and added that having it as their main tool, they are proceeding to equip<\/b>the Mechanism “with the appropriate means to upgrade its overall operational capacity and effectiveness”.<\/p>\n
In conclusion, Mr. Turnas noted: “We do not claim that the battle, against the climate crisis<\/b> is easy. The conditions are getting harder every year. The extreme weather events<\/b> are more frequent, more intense and more unpredictable. That is why the response cannot be piecemeal. It requires planning, investment<\/b>, coordination and constant preparedness. Because the protection<\/b> of human life, civilian property and the natural environment<\/b> is above all a matter of responsibility<\/b> to society and to future generations”<\/b>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
