{"id":5935,"date":"2026-05-16T22:34:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-16T19:34:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.tomanifesto.gr\/?p=5935"},"modified":"2026-05-16T22:34:00","modified_gmt":"2026-05-16T19:34:00","slug":"greece-cyprus-italy-malta-joint-statement-on-migration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/en.tomanifesto.gr\/?p=5935","title":{"rendered":"Greece, Cyprus, Italy, Malta: joint statement on migration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A<b> joint statement<\/b> was made by the<b> leaders of Cyprus, Greece, Italy and Malta<\/b>, in the framework of the Europe Gulf Forum and following their previous meeting in <b>Agia Napa,<\/b> focusing on <b>migration <\/b>issue and the impact of instability in the Middle East<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>The four sides<\/b> underlined the need to prevent a new major migration crisis<\/b>, similar to the one in 2015, noting that close coordination and continuous political cooperation at European level is needed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To this end, the four leaders agreed that discussions should continue on four key areas of work:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>supporting efforts to improve security in the region; <\/li>\n<li>cooperation to ensure that the populations of the region receive the necessary assistance and support; <\/li>\n<li>ensuring the timely and full implementation of the new EU Pact on Immigration and Asylum, also as regards the updated legal framework relevant to crisis situations, including the instrumentalisation of migration, and cases of force majeure, as well as hybrid threats; <\/li>\n<li>to strengthen common preparedness to ensure, in full respect of international law, the security and control of the external borders of the European Union, including through possible unified and coordinated initiatives.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Among the <strong>options<\/strong> being considered by the EU Member States most <strong>directly exposed<\/strong> to the illegal migration &#8220;tsunami&#8221; are: strengthening cooperation with countries of origin and transit, stepping up the fight against <b>smugglers<\/b>, as well as the possible activation of the EU Regulation for crisis and force majeure situations. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>To continue work to maximise the effectiveness of national responses to a possible significant increase in migration flows linked to the conflict in the Middle East, <strong>Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piandozzi will invite his counterparts<\/strong> from Cyprus, Greece and Malta <strong>to meet in Rome on 17 June 2026<\/strong><\/em>,&#8221; the statement further noted.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A joint statement was issued by the leaders of Cyprus, Greece, Italy and Malta, in the framework of the Europe Gulf Forum and following the &#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-5935","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-politics"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/en.tomanifesto.gr\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5935","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/en.tomanifesto.gr\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/en.tomanifesto.gr\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/en.tomanifesto.gr\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/en.tomanifesto.gr\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=5935"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/en.tomanifesto.gr\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5935\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/en.tomanifesto.gr\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=5935"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/en.tomanifesto.gr\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=5935"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/en.tomanifesto.gr\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=5935"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
