A stirring story of strength and hope was shared by Health Minister, Adonis Georgiades<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Mr. Georgiadis<\/b> spoke of the difficult battle<\/b> that little Katerina<\/b> fought against an extremely rare and serious hematological disease<\/b>, for the treatment of which she had to go to the Bambino Ges\u00f9 hospital in the Vatican.<\/p>\n

“I feel blessed that I deserve to be even a little useful in the life battle that Katerina and her family fought and won<\/b>! I was very touched<\/b> to see her in person today, this family has somehow become like my family<\/b> after all the agony we went through together,” wrote Mr Georgiades, who met with little Katerina and her parents.<\/p>\n

“Katerina was diagnosed in the gray area between aplastic anemia and myelodysplastic syndrome, an extremely rare and severe hematological disease, with very few cases per million population worldwide. He underwent a special hATG treatment, which did not respond.<\/p>\n

He was rushed to the Bambino Ges\u00f9 hospital in the Vatican, under the guidance of Professor Franco Locatelli. Despite a search for a compatible donor in the global pool of volunteer bone marrow donors – numbering tens of millions of registered donors – no fully matched donor was found for her case.<\/p>\n

She underwent two highly demanding single-match transplants, first with her brother as a donor and then her father, with the second successfully completed. Having emerged victorious from her life battle, she is currently continuing intensive rehabilitation treatments and close medical monitoring in the transplant department of the Marianna Vardinoyannis Children’s Hospital, ELPIDA.<\/p>\n

I feel Blessed to have been able to be of even a little use in the life battle that Katerina and her family fought and won! I was very touched to see her in person today, this family has somehow become like family to me after all the anguish we have been through together.<\/p>\n
