The President of the Republic, Konstantinos Tasoulas<\/strong>, is known to have a close relationship with Greek literature and particularly with the poetry of Konstantinos Cavafy<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

His love for the work of the great Alexandrian poet was also reflected in a special moment in the centre of Athens. <\/p>\n

After a lunch held at the invitation of the president of the Onassis Foundation<\/strong>, Antonis Papadimitriou<\/strong>, Constantine Tasoulas<\/strong> photographed in front of the famous statue of Kavafis<\/strong>, which is located outside the Foundation’s headquarters on the pedestrian street of Dionysiou Areopagitou<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

The President’s image in front of the statue of the great poet was well received, as it highlighted his deep connection with the world of art and letters. Besides, those who know Constantine Tasoulas<\/strong> know that he maintains a timeless interest in history, literature and Greek cultural heritage. <\/p>\n

Who was<\/b> Konstantinos Cavafy<\/strong> <\/h2>\n<\/h2>\n

Konstantinos Cavafy<\/strong> was born in 1863 in Alexandria, Egypt<\/strong> and is still considered one of the most important figures of modern Greek poetry. He was known as “the Alexandrian”, as he lived most of his life in the multicultural city of Egypt, which deeply influenced his work and thought. <\/span> <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

His poetry stood out for its distinctive style, its historical character and its strong symbolism. Through his poems he spoke about human decay, love, politics, loneliness and the power of the personal journey. Many of his works, such as “Ithaca”<\/strong>, “Thermopylae”<\/strong> and “Waiting for the Barbarians”<\/strong>, were translated into dozens of languages and are still read around the world today. <\/span> <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Another thing that makes his life special is that he died on April 29, 1933, the exact same day as his birthday. <\/span> <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Although now considered a leading poet, he was particularly strict with his work and never went on to publish a major formal collection of poetry during his lifetime. Most of his poems were circulated in manuscript or printed in small pamphlets that he distributed to friends and literary people. <\/span> <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Kavafis<\/strong> managed to create a completely personal poetic style, different from the one prevalent in Greece of his time, which is why his work has acquired a timeless and universal value. <\/span> <\/p>\n<\/p>\n
