In children, injuries to the upper limbs are more frequent because they fall while supporting their arms, resulting in fractures mainly in the wrists and elbows.

He explains that in adults the injuries are usually different and more severe in the lower limbs.

“Adults, because they fall with more momentum, are more often injured in the lower extremities, namely the ankles and knees. There is no lack of shoulder dislocations.”

According to Angoulis, electric scooters have become very popular, mainly because of the easy and affordable mobility they offer. However, he points out that many children use them without proper supervision or knowledge of the risks.

Most accidents happen the first time

The expert also refers to the restrictions imposed by law on underage users.

“Under the legislation, children aged 12-15 are allowed to use electric scooters at a maximum speed of 6km per hour, which is slightly faster than walking. For those over 15, the limit is 25 kilometres per hour. A limit which, unfortunately, is often violated.

At the same time, he notes that changes to the institutional framework are being considered, including a complete ban on the use of electric skates by minors.

Mr Angoules stresses that there should be basic training before use, revealing that many accidents are caused by inexperienced users.

“Children are more prone to accidents because their musculoskeletal system is not yet fully matured and therefore they do not have very good motor control.”

Helmet use significantly reduces risk

The expert also cites international studies, noting that in the US, injuries from electric scooters skyrocketed from about 4,000 in 2014 to nearly 30,000 in 2019.

At the same time, a study from the University of Graz in Austria shows that the use of helmet can reduce head injuries by up to 44%.

“You can’t have someone riding a scooter on expressways without a helmet and talking on a cell phone, or wearing headphones and listening to music.”

In conclusion, Mr Angoules stresses that stricter measures are urgently needed to reduce serious accidents.

“It is imperative that a strict legislative framework is immediately put in place to save lives and reduce serious accidents for both users and pedestrians, with measures such as the ban on use by minors, compulsory insurance and special signage, which have already been announced by the State.”

The ever-increasing use of electric skates in children and adolescents has alarmed experts, as more and more children and adolescents are using them…

[2

post-7046","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-greece
["GET
