The fight against terrorism is undermined"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"612\" data-end=\"850\"> There was a sharp reaction from Turkish foreign ministry after the decision to release <strong data-start=\"722\" data-end=\"748\">Alexandros Yiotopoulos<\/strong>, who was convicted in 2003 as a leading member of the terrorist organisation <strong data-start=\"833\" data-end=\"849\">&#8220;17 November&#8221;<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"854\" data-end=\"1017\"> Ankara issued a statement calling the decision &#8220;an insult to the memory of the victims&#8221; and a blow to international efforts against terrorism. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1021\" data-end=\"1208\">&#8220;We strongly condemn the release, on May 21, 2026, of the leader of the 17 November terrorist organization Alexandros Yiotopoulos,&#8221; the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1212\" data-end=\"1351\">In the same statement, the Turkish side described Yiotopoulos as the instigator of attacks targeting Turkish diplomats in Athens. <\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"fz3ul0\" data-start=\"1362\" data-end=\"1426\"> The attacks on Turkish diplomats cited by Turkey <\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1430\" data-end=\"1595\">The Turkish Foreign Ministry notes that <strong data-start=\"1463\" data-end=\"1489\">Alexander Yiotopoulos<\/strong> was sentenced to <strong data-start=\"1511\" data-end=\"1530\">17 life sentences<\/strong> and an additional 25 years in prison for a series of terrorist acts. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1599\" data-end=\"1789\">According to Ankara&#8217;s statement, Yiotopoulos is believed to be responsible for the murder of <strong data-start=\"1693\" data-end=\"1713\">Cetin Gyorgou<\/strong>, press attach\u00e9 at the Turkish embassy in Athens, on 7 October 1991. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1793\" data-end=\"1997\">At the same time, reference is made to the attempted assassination of the then Turkish ambassador <strong data-start=\"1869\" data-end=\"1892\">Deniz Bolukbashi<\/strong>, but also the 1994 assassination of embassy counsellor <strong data-start=\"1945\" data-end=\"1967\">Khaluk Shipahioglu<\/strong> outside his home. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2001\" data-end=\"2197\">Deniz Bolukbashi later became known for a book he had published on Greek-Turkish disputes in the <strong data-start=\"2118\" data-end=\"2128\">Aegean<\/strong>, and was later elected as a member of parliament with the nationalist <strong data-start=\"2189\" data-end=\"2196\">MHP<\/strong> party. <\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"2kqx8m\" data-start=\"2208\" data-end=\"2261\"> &#8220;Unacceptable show of tolerance&#8221; says Turkish foreign ministry<\/h2>\n<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2265\" data-end=\"2431\"> In a particularly harsh tone, the Turkish foreign ministry claimed the release constituted an &#8220;unacceptable show of tolerance&#8221; towards &#8220;this wretched terrorist&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2435\" data-end=\"2566\"> At the same time, it said the development was a &#8220;grave disrespect to the memory of our martyred diplomats and their families.&#8221;
